EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY.....000.....May 6, 1876 CROSBY 5S. NOYTES...... Reading Matter on Every Page | CIRCULATION OF THE STAR. 15,208 | 15,193 | it sourds odd in these rushing days of * eam and electricity to hear some of the New York journals seriously advocate the establishment of a line of four horse coaches | between New York and Puiladelphia to take passengers to the Centeanial exhibition. And yet after all there is a good deal of sense im the proposition. It is urged that there ts to pleasure in a railroad journey; that it is uncomfortable, especially in warm weather, owing to the sraoke, dust, and ciaders; and that one gets only @ fleeting and unsatisfac- | tory glimpse of the scenery en route. One traveling on business and with no time to waste, cannot afford to patronize the slow stage coaeh in preference to the fly! ear, but there is uudoubted!y « clas! York who would not begralge a few hours’ | extra and a few dollars more in the way of fare in consideration of a novel and pleasant ey of the kind. It is this class that such a line would accommodate. The dis- | tance between the two cities is about one hundred miles, and it Is estimated that by cbanging horses every eight miles the trip | could be made in ten hours. This would be a com/fortabie and exbilarat!ng rate of speed and would enable the passengers to enjoy thescenery as they went. An individual in New York experienced in such matters gives it as bis opinion that such a line would not pay expenses. It would require twelve coaches and sixty horses, a veterinary sur- geon, drivers, stablemen, €c., and unless all Of the seats could be sold at seven dollars apiece the enterprise would not pay expenses. A New York paper is of the opinion, how- ever, that many persons would be willing to pay ten dollars @ seat, at which rate the line certainly ought to remunerate its proprie- tors. Pat. Woods, of Richmond, who practised fisticuffs on the poll of Congressman .Porter, of Virginia, is about to enter suit against the United States for faise imprisonment. ‘Whom will he sue? The Forty-third Con- gress which imprisoned him is among the things which were, and Mr. Ordway is no longer Sergeant-at-Arms of the House. It ‘would besafe to wager @ sixpence that Mr. ‘Woods, of Richmond, will never enrich him- self by this sult. It recalis Don Quixote’s encounter with the wind mills. ~~ _-<e2-_____ Cor siderable feeling has manifested itself here relative to the refusal of the Philadel- phia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad to reduce its rates of fare toa reasonable Sgure during the centennial e€position, and itis suggested that Col. Scott supply this demand by putting on an excursion train running via York and Columbia, over the Pennsylvania roads to Philadelphia, the distanceoply consuming about 30 minutes more time than the regular route; the same arrangements that Col. Scott adopted at the time the Baltimore, Wilmington and Phila delpbia road refused to carry his cars. An excursion train such as this at 25 for the round trip could not only be made to pay bandsomely, but be a railroad achievement that would add to the already great reputa- tion of Scott tosupply the wants of the trav- eling public. ——_—__-+ee- —_____ ‘We regret to learn that the Georgetown Courter was issued to-day for the last time It was the only newspaper published in our sister city, and deserved a better fate. Its literary contents, original and selected, were creditable to the taste and culture of Mr. J. D. McGill, who bas manfully struggled for eleven long years to make his journal a suc- cess, and failing for no fault of his own, Yields to the inevitable without whining, modestly contenting himself with the an mouncement: “The publication of this paper is suspended.” OCABD—DB.
