ESTIMATE OF THE AMOUNT WHICH CAN BE REALIZED FROM THE CITIZENS’ TAX BILL. In reply toa note from Hou. A. H. Buck- ner, chairman of the House District Com. mittee, requesting an estimate of what amount might be realized from the tax as proposed in bill A. R., No. 2,676. (the citi zeb's tax bill,) the District Commissiovers t the coliectorestimates the amount follows: City of Washington. “Georgetown. Tota)...... Deduct le per cent. delinquencies. Net amount... Add for licenses. Total...... see ec ences « S100 FH 39 The above estimate does not include the amount to be derived from the tax on fur- oiture, as there is nodata in the records of the District on which tofound it. There are in the District al! some 28,000 houses. Of these about 15,000 receive Potomac water. If wesvppose the average assessable cash value of the furniture in these houses to be $900, (300 of this exempt by law from taxa- tion.) we shall in this way get a valuation of $9,000,000, on which 1 per cent. is $135,000. Taking off 10 per cent. delinqueacties leaves $121,500 as @ rongh estimate of the amount to be derived from this source. We may, per Paps, assume $125.000 as the sum in roand numbers; but ef course our estimate made thus mey be far ontof the way. Many of the houses receiving Potomac water are small ones, and most of those not receiving it have probably bnt little faraiture of value intbem. We might make an estimate in respect to the 15,000 houses receiving water by supposing the ass ssabie valuation of farniture to be as follows 1069 houses, value of fara $1,306 660.43, 130,686.04 tare.. 1500 1,000 s cesta. 500 San average valuation of 21.109, or, deducting for ) exemption, of £500 for taxation, which is $120,000,000 fora total tax- able amount. One and one-half per cen npon this, after deducting for 10 per cent. de- linquencies, gives @ net amount of $102,000. as The Aftican M. EF. Conference.
