P. W. have in some instances been modified so as to substitute class of work, thereby increasing the cost; as in the case of the sea walls of the James Creek pavement of the carriageway of Maryland Avenue, 8. W., and the footwalks of the same A\ while the parking has generally been dispensed with, and the grading materially reduced. No taken of the incidental saving to public and private property in the future improvement of i and adjacent streets in consequence of the reduced amount of grading, although this is conside the other hand, in the computation of the estimates for the perfection of the Board work (column next the last) the general plans of the B. P. W. have in some cases been taken ax a guide where the contract seemed inconsistent with them; as in the case of Maryland Avenue, N. E,, where gravel footwalks were progided because the B. P. W. were unable to purchase bricks for their paper; and upon the same Avenue, & W., where a blue rock pavement was provided for the carriageway, although this class of pavement condemned and replaced by other pavements on less important streets, and that of Belgian blocks fo Avenue was in harmony with the general plan of improvement. In such cases, of which there are fery few, the increased expenditure under the Commissioners is offset in thg column of estimates bei i But where the modification was not in accordance with the plans of the B. P, W., as in the change in the character of the sea walls of the James Creek Canal, the increased cost is not in that ext To these estimates, as made at Board rates for each class of work, according td ite measurement, is added, here, the percentage for engineering work of this description. “This is subject to deduction on account of inferior material or workmanship, apon final examinati 564,292 87 | of the work.
