EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: CROSBY 5S. NOYES........EGitor, CIRCULATION OF THE STAR. Sworn Statement. Monday, March 20. Total Circulation for the Woek.. Average Daily Circulation........1. The attention of advertisers is called to the above figures. They show that, taking into account the extent and quality of cir- culation, which alone are the measure of ‘value in gaining publicity for business an- Bouncements, It does not cost half as much to advertise in THE STAR as it does in any SPECIAL ART NOTICE. What the Gdvertiser wants is to reach the eyes of the whole Public, not to advertise fog the fun of advertising. The Connecticnt Election The election in Connecticat takes place next Monday. The candidates for Governor are:—Republican, Henry C. Robinson; Dem- oeratic, Governor Ingersoll. The Legis! w elected will choose a Senator to succeed the late Senator Ferry, whose un- expired term is now filled by English. There is also an election to Congress in the third district, to fill out the term of the late Rep- resentative Starkweather. In this district the republicans have a majority, though rendered variable by the temperance vote. The democrats have nominatei David A. Wells, in the hope of gaining the votes of Uberal, hard-money and triff-reform re- publicans. In 1575 Starkweather received a plurality of 942, in » votes. His majority over both was Governor Ingersoll had, tn 1573, ity, the Temperance ticket having 2,541 Votes; in 1574, 1,809, the Temperance ticket receiving 4,9¢0 votes; in 1575 his majority was 6,538, the Temperance ticket receiving 2; Votes. In the Legislature the democrats have also had a rising majority since 1873. In 1875 they had a majority of nise in the Senate and twenty-four in the House. There is a Temperance candidate running for Gover- nor, and a Greenback candidate, who is a banker of Democratic antecedents. Appa- Tently the republicans h that they hope to reduce the democratic ma- Jority considerably. ——___ 460. The serious allegations against Gen. Bab- cock and Mr. Luckey made by one Bell be- forea Congressional committee yesterday, mayor may not be true. The committee Will, of course, seek for corroborative evi- dence, and unless it 1s forthcoming there Will be but few to believe the unsupported testimony of a man who confesses that he betrayed the President, who wanted no @ very little | chance of carrying the state, but report says | , the temperance ticket recelv- | : major- | guilty man to escape, and played into the | hands of Babcock and his friends for a pecu- niary consideration. ——_- ore The Centennial Committee bas very proper. ly reported in favor of a suitable appropria- tion to enable the exeentive departments of the government to make a respectaple showing at Philadelphia. The House Ap- Propriations Committee, which has not particularly distinguished itself forliberal- ity, will now be called upon to Indorse or disapprove this recommendation. it is a notorious fact that while Americans as {n- dividuals, and foreign governments, are Making extensive preparations for a credita- ble exhibit, the United States, as a govern- ment, has as yet done scarcely anything except to give a certainsum towards defray- ing the expenses of the exhibition. With an adequate propriation the different de partments and the Smithsonian Institution could make @ most interesting exhibit. The Smithsonian, for instance, could send to Philadelphia a collection of instructive curiosities which would be viewed with deep interest and profit by every visitor. The same might be said of the exhibits of the Indian Bureau, Bureauof Education, Gene- raj Land office, the Patent office, &c. It ts to be hoped the Appropriation Committee ill act favorabiy and act as once, as it is apparent there is no time to lose. —__..e--—_ There is a good deal of curiosity to Know to which Presidential candidate the vote of the Pennsylvania republican delegation will ultimately be given. As the case now stands it looks as if the chances of Blaine and Conk- ling of securing it were about equal. The Pennsylvanians naturally take pride in the record of Mr. Blaine, who was born in their state, and it is thought by many that he will be the final choice of the delegates. On the other hand, the warm friendship of thesenior Senator from that state for Mr. Conkling leads many to believe that the former's con- ceded influence in his state will secure the selection of the stately New Yorker. Well we shall see. ——__-<¢e--_____ United States Senators are considerably exercised over the fact that their transac- tions in executive session frequently see the light of day through the newspapers, and have instructed a conimittee to ascertain where the leak is. Would it not be better for the Senate to do away with executive Sessions altogether and let the public know just what it isdoing at ail times? The ex- cuse given for secret sessions is that Sena- tors frequently feel a delicacy in speaking their minds freely in relation to confirming Or rejecting nominations. The excuse is bardly valid. Great injustice is often done to individuals before the Senate for confirm- ation, since grave charges are frequently made against them which they haye no op- portunity todisprove. Besides, the system Of secret sessions is un-republican and _con- trary to the spirit of our institutions. ———_ +++ ——_ Ex Governor Dix has written a vehement letter against taxing chureh property, in which be says that the proper mode of treat- ing the movement is to scout It out of the committee rooms, legislative halls, and Social circles, which it has defiled by its pre- sence, and that to give it any countenance Would be to furnish new ground for the na- tonal reproach too often cast upon us, that the almighty dollar is the chief object of our | adoration. The New York £vening Post very sensibly thinks that General Dix, as an offi- cer of the richest church in this country, will not escape the charge of a certain amount of Prejudice in his views on the question, and Says be appeals rather to fecling than argu- ment in presenting his opinion.
