Detective MeDevitt testified that he went to Alexandria on Monday about § o'clock, with Lawson; identified the orders given Lawson the District of Columbia. CLAIMING THE BOTANICAL OARDEN. Mr. Spencer also introduced a bill, which was referred to the Judiciary Committee, authorizing the heirs of Daniel Carroll, of Duddington, to institute proceedings in the Court of Claims for the purpose of ascertin- Ing aud settling ius rights of the sald heirs in and to the pleee of ground bounded by Maryland avenue, 2d street, B street and Carroll street, and now known as square west of square 56, in W: ington. The Court of Claims is to render judgment fn favor of such claimants. for whatsoever amount their interest in said property may be reasovably worth, whether the estate of the clalmants be legal or equitable, and for such sum as may be just and equitable, for tne use and occupation by the United States of the said property up to the rendition of said judgment. The bill further provides* that before the Secretary of the Treasury sbail pay any judgment of the Court of Claims, he shall require from the claimants 4 deed to the United States of the parcel of ground in question. The ground in question, containing 25,026 square feet, is now a part Of the Botanical garden grounds, and the | petitioners ask to be reimbursed for the taking of the ground, which they value at #150 per square foot, aud also that they be paid for its use. The petition was also intro- duced in the House and referred to the Com- mittee on Public Buildings and Grounds. PUBLIC ADVERTISING IN THE DISTRICT At the sessiou of the House last night Mr Steyenson introduced @ bill, watch was re ferred to the District Committee, regalating the cost of legal advertiring in the District of Columbia, which limits the charge for ad- vertising in any suit in law or equity, or under the terms of any mortgage or deed ot trust, to ten cents @ line for the first inser- tion, and seven cents for each subsequent in- tertion. Section two authorizes the judges of the Supreme Court of the District, or a ma- jority of said judges, to designate from time to time, one or two newspapers publisne tin the District, for a time limited, unless re- yoked, a8 official, to do all the advertising of the class d ited, provided no such official designation shall be made until meng h ae tor agrees to charge no more than the rates herein specified.
