Mrs. Eliza Hawthorne fainted in the Wash- ington Place police court yesterday before the justice’s bench. She had come with her mother, Mrs. Dr. Lownes, of 101 east 19th Street, lo substantiate a charge of abandon- ment against her husband. It was upon the appearance of the husband, who was led tn with other prisoners, that she gave way. In the early part of last year two daughters of Dr. Lownes were receivi the addresses of two brothers, John and Charles Haw- thorne. The girls’ parents opposed the inti- macy, and Dr. Lownes forbade the yous men to enter his house. Tae girls s.ippe: out slyly one evening, and were married to the Hawthornes in the house of a friend. Dr. Lownes cast off his daughters. Charles and his wife lived happily for a short time at the house of his mother, 30 Waverley place. Then he lost employment and they were dependent for suppor. = his mother, who disiiked the young wife. A child was born to the couple, and four da: afterwards Mrs. Lee went to tae Infant asy- lum at 24 Clinton place, and, representing herself to bea missionary, procured the ad- mission of the mother and child. She that the mother’s name was Horton, and that she had found her ta destitute circum- stances. Mrs. Hawthorne remained in the institution until she was recognized by a physician who was acquainted with her father. In the meantime (so she testified in court) she had repeatedly written to her busband, but had received no auswer,; nordid he go to see her. The husband testified that he had done the best he could to support his wife, but had no money, being himself sup- ported entirely by his moiber. He had sought his wife in @lmost every asylum in the city, but could not find her. Her letters had never been received by him. He asked his mother where she had gone, aud she wouldn't tell.
