(Correspondent of the Pall Malt Gazette } The patriarchal character of the Tarkish home Is its chief characteristic. Every morning the household gather around their head and respectfully kiss his hand—no oe: formality with the.a, but a necessary and €ven indispensable token, in their eye3, of respectfal allegiance. In the household, too, are included not only the children but those whorn we are obliged by the poverty of our language to designate as “slaves.” Nowhere as in Turkey Js the precept of St. Paul so fully realized, ‘Servants, be obedient to your masters.” If,on the other band, it be true that the unit of the state is the far A it may be said that the true idea of the fami- jy only extats in the east. Nowhere else, too, do people live so continually in the presence of each other. A Roman once said, “Build me a house where I shall be seen by every one évery hourin theday.” This is Living, too, continually in the presence of each other, their conduct is subject to and Influence by the public opinion of those around them in & way that no European’s can be. Two sight may seem coutradictory, but are in he entire ab- and respect paid to every degree of rank. There 1s no such thing In Turkey as the & paration of classes, each living shut up by itself, suspicious of each other, like antago- nistic and hostile forces;there is no such thing therefore, as class divisions, elass hatreds, ciass interests, and the revolutionary pas- sions engender. Consider for a momeni, when you tulk so glibly of driving tue barbariaus out of Europe, of the strength with which sucha fact as this gives toa nation. Iam i ined to think, deliberately, that the only nation—in the proper sense of the term—in Evurepe is te Ottoman. Now, what renders this intermixture of all classesin Turkey possible, and the absence of which would render the same thing tmpossibie in Europe, is exactly Turkish politeness, formulated in intercourse of the different classes with each other, and renders impossibie that familiar- ity to which, but for this barrier, such gen- eral Intermixture would be liable, and which would quickly dissolve it into general ¢- fusion and mutual contempt. If this view be correct, with such facts as this before our eyes it would be difficult to talk lightly of the value of as leness and etiquette. It is not too much to say that the very boue of society in Turkey is respect; that politeness is with them the elaborated .odeof respect, and that this respect and this code of polite Less are the frst and most important lesson i leated in the harem. It takes the form of filial respeet—the source and sprivg of all respect—and then, in natural progression, of heuer to all those to whom hovor is due. The Column of July in Paris after af forcing facilities to many suicides, for once been the means of saving a life. Some days ago a cabinetmaker living in the Faubourg Saint Antoine had avery unpleasant cou- versation with his wife regarding the re- dneed state of his salary, which the attribu- ted rot to a diminished sense on the part of bis employer of the value of bis services, but to increased consumption on his own ac- count at the wine shop. She stated her grievance so strongly, in: yndl he replied to her accusations with so much warmth, that the neighbors interfered to pnt a stop to the discussion. No sooner bad he cashed gut of the house than his wife irritated feellpgs calmed down, and, know- ing her Antone was quite capable ofmating good bis word, ran out t0 overtake him an Lo the catastrophe. Fortunately for th parties the intending suicide, who had reached the Place dela Bastille with a view to throwing himself into the water, caught sight of the column which adorns that local- ity, when the idea strack him that it would perhaps be best to ascend it and thence throw himself to the ground, thus losing a | few minutes in deliberation. This delay was sufficient to enable his wife to come up and, with the help ofa passing stranger, lo pre- vent him from throwing himself into tae canal. The reseued man proved open to reason, and, having stuffed bis pipe and lit up, quietly observed, “I hesitated between aur and water; I now decide in fayor of fire.’ eee A HOPELESS, CHEERLESS, DESPAIRING@ MOTH ER, Who never discovers any good in a troublesome chiid, or any hope for one who | doors west of 9th street, jus: breaks a commandment or two, before it une derstands the difference between right and Wrong, is as wretehed a creature as a hen that hatches ducks. She seems to have ex- pected that her cherubs were tocome straight trom Paradise, and grow up into full saint- 1 without giving her the slightest trouble in directing thom. She is fretful and peevish, and pours out her miserable He pment peed over the cradle, while the child is still so ta that itonly comprehends the pitifal Sound’ of her voice, and puts up its little quivering a in inysterious sympathy, and weeps.
