EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON: CROSBY S NOYES........Editor. Bee Circulation More than Three Times that of any other Daily Pa- | wer published in Washington, and therefore by far the Best Adrer. tising Medium in the District of Columbia. Home Managem: Railroads. Mr. Henry Hart, of ham street, New York, is not wanted here. The stockholders ©! the Washington and Georgetown railroad, ‘With great unanimity, to-day elected him to Stay at home. In fact, the Hart party found the feeling so strong against him amongst Bhe stockholders, and the determination to Cefeat bis attempt to regain control of the road so unmistakable, that they abandoned the field, without a contest. A board of di- wectors (mainly citizens of Washington), of ebaracter and responsibility, headed by Mr. George W. Riggs, has been elected, and, of Course, the present efficient president, Mr. Hart, will be retained in that position. In the hands of men of this standing in the com- munity, it may be safely assumed that the Yoad will be managed in a reputable man- @er—in a way advantageous both to the Btockholders and the pubiic. In one particu- Jar our community has reason to really thank Mr. Hart for making his greedy grab in the direction of the control of this road, The alarm felt by the Washington stockhoid- €rs cver the possibility that the road might @et again under the discreditable Chatham Bireet management, caused them to take Prompt measures to regain the controling interest in the road; and the majority of the Stock is now owned in Washington. That fontroling interest should never have been Bllowed to go away from Washington, and We are glad there is sufficient public spirit ‘Smongst our business citizens to reclaim it. Wo railroad, certainly no street ratiroad, Fhould be owned outside of the community Which it serves. Such outside owners have generally but one object in view, and that is Zo squeeze just as much out of the road as Possible, and put into it just as little as pos- sible. The history of the meanly managed Philacelphis, Wilmington aud Battimore Fead, the stock of which Is owned in Massa- chusetts, is a cage in point. -<0-- Quoting from THe STAR on the proposed Bbolition of the free-delivery system, the bio Slate Journat says: “THE Srak is very right, as usual. No city that has enjoyed the advantages of the carrier system wili willingly return to the Primitive system, which forced the whole Population to spend valuable time in visit- bg the post office. if only to see whether ibere was anything for them. The hardship alls heaviest on the men of few letters, who may make many calis for each letter re- ceived.” —_—-+ee-___ At the last meeting of the joint committee ©u light of the city council of Richmond, ‘Wa., it was decided to reduce the price of gas 0 and after February Ist from thgee dollars Per thousand feet to two dollars per thou- Band feet. The Dispa'ch, in reporting the Zact, says: “This speaks well for the man- Bg ment of the gas department.” It does, @ud we only need add that the city owns and Controls its own gas-works. It may be far- ther noted that when the price is reduced there, an immc¢diate inerease of the quantity Cvssamed is not registered by the meters in mse. ——-<+e -____ “The Cineinnat; Commercialsays that its ad- ocacy of the nomiration of Greeley, which nominatic joxe pati b: 2 caused his death. was only They have odd ideas of fan in Cincin- Washington Star.
