EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON: January 10, 1876. BR Circulation More than Three | Times that of any other Daily Pa- | Per published in Washington, and | therefore by far the Best Adrer-— tising Medium in the District of Columbia, . To Advertisers. In order that the large and rapidly increasing edition of THE STAR may be delivered to ts car- riers and served to subscribers at a reasonable | our each day, it is necessary to close the forms Gs nearly as possible at 3 o'clock p.m. Adverti- Bers are therefore requested to send in their adver- tisements not later than TWELVE O'CLOCK. If recetved after this hour there is great danger that, @tth the exception of imperative cases—such as Deaths, Lost, &e.,—they cannot appear until the Tollowing day. ——__ -wee- i Throwing Stones from Vitreous Ten- ements, Soctat Gossip GRAMMAR.—Here is an installment of Lindley Murray from the Star's society notes of Friday. Who rans the syntax of that column? “The Senate ladies (as custom authorizes the wives of Senators to be styled) who was ‘at home’ yesterday had very pleasant recep- tions. The number making calls were not so large as on the two preceding days nor were the receptions quite so numerous. Bhoot it.—[ The Capital. This certainly appears to be a pretty well €efined case of bad syntax, and it serves to show how easily such errors slip into print, undetected, in the hurried work of issuing a eaily paper. But It probably did not occur to our critic of The Cxpifat that the more leisurely prepared wecklies are not without sin in this respect, and that, for instance, the ver umber of his paper tn which he Founces with such relish upon the above STAR ‘lip, contains almost as many blun- ders as paragraphs. Thus on the editorial pege it is raid ave twosorts of goverament officials. 4 supposed to represent the will and of the people, and are necessarily clec- And again: “To have sucha freight of living humanity suddenly buried into eternity, leaving be- bind no wreck,no trace by which the tragedy could be told, enveloping the loss in an im- Penetrable mystery. makes one shrink ant »budder more than any other crime known.” And again, brother Piatt in describing a mysterious midnight raid upon his wiue cellar says “Now, while Downing’s polities! prinet ples are bad and his cooking worse. his Whisky was good. and failing to secure a continuation of his subterranean Congres sional headache. colic and stone-in-the gall bladder, had enme tn the night-time to ra- Possess himself of that quarter-john of old whisky.” This sentence is so much on the “tangle- foot” orcer of construction that we really suspect Piatt must have robbed his awa Wine-cellar in some fit of somnambulism, ard that he wrote the description while act- ing as the vigilant demi Donn custolian of Downing’s unrepossessed nectarian whisky. Apybow the whisky seems to be the only antecsdent to the inebriated sentence. But not to particularize too closely, we take at random the following, from every page, and almost from every article In yes- terday's (op ifal “Some burgiars are appre where togo to loo f ceneed by the fac “We congratulate the Army cul Ni nal upon the strong stand they are against a reduction of the army.” “Now is the time to purchase diaries and reform.” Diaries can be fow but where, oh © e chases? “The colonel is as handsome as usual, and ail the professions were well represented by prominent members of each” “The freest of the school # is the Pjactice getting to be ia rogue again of ro. ing the grammar and intermediate schools of books, papers, pens and other articles of Iterature. It must be scholars who carry on this nefarious habit, as regularly orniained thieves would scorn such small jobs.”” Does the Capife! mean that it is scholars or pupils who “carry on this nefarious haic’ or “system” or “practice"? We should sup- pose that se/iwlars would hardly care for Juve- Bile text books. But we must hurry on. from a single page: “Among those who sang was Mre. Imo- Brown, whose failure in opera, in Lon- , bas always been inexplicable to her friends here who have admired her fine so- prano vote and excellent method. Signor ‘erranti, whose buffo singing drove some of the audience quite Ferranti-c with delight, nd Miss Antonio Heune, a very pleasing contralto. Mz. Alfred H. Pease played with Senor Cervantes a brilliant transcription of bis one composition on themes from Faust, and Signor Cervantes played some of his best pieces.” “Among the throng present was John E derkin. General Custer, Mora, the oto- pher, (one of onr handsome men;) W. B. Rosbervitte, Montague L. Marks, Daniel Bixby, (fitting from flower to flower, the butterfly he is:) Miss Fiorence Duncan, the Canadian correspondent, and Miss Rosa Mc- Geachy, @ young lady who has been singing with Von Bulow, and who was to have come out in opera once on 3 time.” “At these receptions, by the way, the gen- tlemen are not necessarily restricfed to joim- dng the giddy throng.” “Everything about the affair was admira- bly conducted. In the first place, there was plenty of room, and that is everything.” “Whatever his motive, whether compli- @nce to the feminine will who ‘would like to see what there is so very attractive about that place,’ or gallant homage fo she who adorns the place where sic may happen to be, the fact remains that three of our clubs are setting valiiant examples to more con- Rervative institution: «1 opening the way, if not into the inner mysteries of tne temple, At least in’o the ouler Walls where ceremony yeigus and poker playing, scandal ay ¢criminate chaf are things unknown.” “We have.on good authority, the « Ment of Miss Fanny Davenport that Wrote the last three acts, together manager of the Fifth Avenue theater. “Ifso, there would seem to have been no Yeason why the letter of the contract should Rot bave been filled i Pique (or Clara, az it was to have been called,) brought forward for Miss Morris’ first appearance, instead of her being asked to oblige the management by urdertazing Leah (in its new (?) form) @nd assume the old roles of her repertoire.” “While it afforded on the first night some port ¥ for the display of the talents of ihe general company, it has now been re- @uceias much as possible to @ one-part vated, and know or Rood things, as is evi- &e. atall the bookstores, , is reform to be pur- tems Here is a batch “And how smart that Miss Rigi should re- main sijent until the “star of the evening, ee a was obliged to turn. How able that Miss Jeifreys-Lewis, who jas las leading lady of the company, was re- mired to play Cordelia, Desdemoas and the ke, should submit meekiy to a y # and fwice foud cutting: «How strange that when a member of the pany is given two seats the amount be feund deducted from their salary.” “We have most enjoyed this actress when they have been rowched usin role of a grand coquette.” “Few of those who visited the mansion Mistress the diamonds adorned would ve imagined that the sparkling circtet she abont her neck was the gift of the late it colonel of the Ninth to the queealy ty whose fatal smile shed Its lichtove rose strewn path which led to rain aod But we bave exhausted our space and Step. We can assure our friends of the iat that we have made the a»ove presea- » hot at all in the spirit of carping, or fiuding, but to show them that faalty x is pot confined to the dally press, and The New York city council have recently enactcd an ordinance which anthorizes policemen, on complaint of @ cltizea, to enter private dwellings for the purpose of cestroying barking dogs, singing canaries, and other pet animals. Very naturally ‘h a regulation is exceedingly offensive to an American citizen, and the New York Evening Post thinks the police have enough to do, and do it offensively enough already in too many cases, without the additional power now conferred upon them to enter houses upon the authority of a magistrate, and there slaughter animals against which the neighbors happen to entertain a well or ill-founded prejudice. It recalls the case of Minister Cushing, who @ few years ago, in this city. found in the common law ample means of abating the nuisance of a howling cur upon a neighbor's premises, and believes that the people of New York need ne new and objectionable ordinaces to give them | like protection. There is no doubt that the faith of the United States is already pledged to the pay- ment of the principal and interest of the Dis- trict 3-65 bonds, but the resolation of Mr. Slemcns, passed by the House of Represen- tatives, will, when adopted by the Senate, finally put a stop to the continual agitation of the question by designing persons, either to advance their own pecuniary interests or damage thore of the District of Columbia. —e The proposed abolition of the free delivery *ystem of the Post Office department does not meet with much favor. The Richmond Whig coincides with the views on thesubject lately expressed in Tae STAR, and says there is some apprehension that the new broom may sweep & little too clean, and that bad the cities never known the luxury of free delivery it would be a small matter to them, but to bedeprived of it row would be cruel. The postal service has never been celf-sustajning, nor is there any demand that itshall be made so; instead of cutting off any, rather give us better facilities. ——___- «+e - —___ The wind had a tussle with the “Schroeder airship’ in Baltimore yesterday and the fying machine came out second best in the contest, being broken and twisted out of all proportion. The question naturally arises, if the wind damaged the ship so badly while it was resting on terra firma, what would have been the result had it been sailing in mid-air? A Virginia paper, denying the statement that that state does not wish to encourage the Centennial, compares her with Cin- derella, who is anxious to attend the grand ball, but cannot go because her cruel legisla- tive father insists on keeping her home among the cinders, while her proud and well- dressed sisters go in full toilette, a Ex-Mayor Oakey Hall has been tried in the « Crucible,” and virtually confesses him- self found wanting. For one who placed himself on the topmost round of the theatri- cal ladder without first having gained the experience which can only be acquired by a laborious progression through the subordi- nate grades, Mr. Hall did quite as weilas could bave been expected.
