Bird, tne ‘aglish Chess Champion, on Both Sides the Atiantic — Paul jorphy’s Condition. Mr. H. E. Bird, the distingnished Eoglish chess- player, who arrived # short time ago in this country, will go to Pailadelpbia soon, when arrangements are expected to be mate for a chess tournament of the world. He will be able to speak better toan aay other Englishman for the players of tnat country, and is expected to suggest sacl modifications in the arrangements as will be le to European contes- tants. It is intended to make the chess tour- —— — at ee ares of the Sentenntal Exposition, t is py that tatives from every, "ation where chess organizations exist shall be consulted in devising the rules and reguiations under which the matenes are to be decided. Mr. Bird has already communicated with the committees. He will probably be accompanied to Patl- adelphia by Mr. McKensi e, the chess cham. pion ofthiseity. Mr. McK ensie has played with him and won the odd game, but it was by the courtesy of the English player, who declined an opportunity to make the ‘game drawn. Since has been in New York he has frequented the Cafe Internationale, where he has played nearly every day be tween the hours of twelve and three o'clock. ‘The frst player with whom he engaged ina series of games was Rice, of this city Al first the American » bat before the close of the series Mr. Bird was considerably abead. A small stake w: ured oa each game. He plays @ remarkably quick ani “clean” game. Hitnerto bis countrymen have been distinguishable for the slowness rather than the rapidity with which they made their moves. The French players move with the greatest rapidity; the Italians are next in order, the Germans next, and the English last, acconting to the tra! dittons of ue game. The “cieanuess” of his game shows itself in the absence of all un- certainty after he has once made up his mind to make a move. He sits well away from the board, and seldom allows his bands or even his elbow to rest on the table unless it is his own turn to move. When he has de- cided upon a move the decision Is indicated by a sudden movement of the hand, which, with the precision of a machine, takes up the piece apd derosits it in the centre of its new square. He has been abie to play, with. out noticeable nervous exhaustion, as many as seventeen games in one day, though they were not played with persons whom he great- ly cared lo beat or for stakes. He hasa qalet, gentlemanly, pleasing address, is about 45 } ears old, short in stature, portly, bald, flor- id, and good-natured, with lightsoft whiskers fringing his face, on bis cheeks and beneath his cbin. His resideuce is in London, and he isan hororory member of the City of Lon- don Chess Club. He often plays in the St. George's Chess Club rooms, which are largely resorted to by the wealthy and titled lovers of the game. Staunton, who lately died. was an intimate friend with whom’ he spent many hours in conversation and studies of difficult positions. In his lifehehas played ‘with some of the best players of Europe, hay- ing bad varying luck wiih Wisker, Sceinetz, Andersen, Macdonnel, Boden, Blockbarue, and ikertort. Buckle, the author of the “History of Civilization,” who was naturally one of the greatest of chess- players, though his practicedid not equal his theoretical Knowledge, was ofien pitted against him. In no ‘regularly contested match has Mr. Bird ever won less than haif the games. In @ match with Steinitz ne only won five outof seventeen games played, while Steinitz won seven, but the maten was not finished, being broken off by the neces- sity of Mr. Bistt to this country in 1856. His game with Anderson and Boden are quoted in chess publications as among the most brilliant on record. They are not asoriginal in design as some of Morphy's, bat in fer- lility of resources and in building up ua- promising positions there is no better expo- nent of chess, probably,in this country or his own. By profession Mr. Bird is @ railway ac- countant. On the visit to this couatry al- jnded to above he came in the capacity of anditor of the Atlantic and Great Westera railway. He played during tat trip a few games only besides the series with Mr. Mc- Kensie. ‘e had before been in this country in 1860,and again in 145, but hal played many games, the report of which fouad re- cord in chess publications. Indeed, few of the gentlemen with whom he transacted business Were aware that he was a master of thegame. Recently he wrote a book en- tilied “Chess Masterpieces,” which con- sists of his annotations on various remarka- ble games. It is dedicated to Kolirch. He has not hesitated during his visit to the United States to avow his readiness to play with any expert with whom a match can be arranged. He has been invited to visit Bos- ton and Buffalo by the chess clubs of those cities, and in the course of the month, Which is the time he has fixed for his stay Mere, he will probably contest the palm of victory with allour pripcipal players. He will, it is expected, be handsomely entertained by the chess players of Philadelphia. A series of games was begun the other day with Albe- roni in this city. The stakes were small amounts. Victory at last reports remained with Mr. Bird, though by not a large major- ity of games. The ew York Chess Club, soon after the deain of Mr. James Thom) , Whose nat- ural energy and zeal for the game Kept it alive, ceased to be supported, and the prin- cipal gathering place of chess players in this city at present is the Cafe Internationale at No. 24 tigne 2 Here Mr. Bird has been pearly every afternoon, the centre of a large circle of lookers-on. Among the latter are many gentlemen who are famous in New York chess annals. There has been seen here Dr. B. I. Raphael, of No. 19 East Ninth street, who was oue of the four persons who won prizes in the great American chess tour- nament of 1857. There were thirty-two contestants. Paul Morphy won the first prize, Paulsen the second, Lichtenstein the third, and Dr. Raphael the fourth. This tournament it was that gave Mr. Morphy bis prominence in the world of chess, and t which led bim to make the tour to Euro} whteh covered him with glory and broug! credit to his native country for a kind of ability which it had been supposed, and as a result of very natural reasoning, to be en- urely lacking. Here, also, have been seen Messrs. A. Zerega, F. Bernier, P. H. Wor- rell, Mason, Richardson, of Williamsburg; Dr. Barnett, of Brooklyn; Delmar and Near, of New Jersey. Many of these men have long since ceased to take much active inter- est in chess matters, but the presence of Mr. Bird has stimulated them to revisit the old haunts of the game. Besides these and a large number of lesser notabilities, the room was crowded with amateurs. PAUL MORPHY. A oe vate letter toa gentieman in Colam- bia, 8.
