_EVENI IN G STAR. ~ WASHINGTON . FRIDAY... December 31, 1875. mosny s BOWER...+.0-cBAltor, | B@y™ Circulation More than Three Times that of any other Daily Pa- per published in Washington, and therefore by far the Rest Adrer- tising Medium in the District of Columbia. To Advertisers. In order that the large and rapidly increasing edition of THE STAR may be delivered to tts car- riers and served ‘o subscribers at a reasonable hour each day, it is necessary to close the forms Gs nearly as possible at 3 o'clock p.m. Adverti- sers are therefore requested to send in their adver- tisements not later than TWELVE O'CLOCK. If received after this hour there is great danger that, with the exception of imperative cases,—such as Deaths, Lost, &¢.,—they cannot appear until the Jollowing day. Greeting to the Centennial New Year In all parts of the country—except Wash- Ington'—the advent of the Centennial year will be greeted at midnight with demonstra- tions of marked enthusiasm. In Baltimore the occasion will be celebrated by the wel- coming peal of “Big Sam,” the ringing of Christ Church chimes and other church bells, ‘and also the bells of the fire department, and the Ulumination of the new city hall. A general display of bunting will be made dur- ing Saturday. In New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and other leading cities, appropriate demonstrations will also be made. Ino ad- dition to towns and cities already men- tioned, the following are reported in the line of the Centennial glorification to night: At Middletown, N. Y., the church bells are be to rung, locomotive and factory whistles blown, and the churches are to have services from lio’clock to midnight, and the town Will be i!luminated until 1 o’clock. There will also be bonfires, Illuminations, fireworks, and a torchlight procession of a hundred horsemen. Theevent will be celebrated at Portsmouth, N. H.,by a large mass meet- Ing, concert, parade, Ke. At Poughkeepsie, N. Y.,ail the military, firemen, and civic organizations will parade, a salate of oae bundred gaus will be fired, all the belis in the city rung, public and private buildings illuminated, aud the streets lighted by bon- Gres. New Londoa, Conn., will celebrate With bell-ringing, cannon, illuminations and music. Gettysburg, Pa, will fira a salute from Cemetery Hill, and bave a general beil-ringing and illumination. Wor- cester, Mass., willbave a general iliumina- ton of dwellings and stores and an artillery salute. Philedeiphia will indulge in a gene- ral illumination on New Year's eve, all front Windows being lighted up. Washington city, the capital nation, as above stated, has no place in the list of cities that will do hooor to the event. Beyond the ringing of the Metropolitan chureh chimes, and the fire bells striking the numbers 1776-1576, there feems to be absolutely nothing contemplated here in the way of a demonstration. It is Bot too late, however, to remedy the failure tosome extent. The public buildings should be illuminaied, and many private citizens Would doubtless join in the matter by illu- minating their houses. By all means, the Capitol should be lighted up from basement to dome; but certainly the dome of the great national building should send out its ray of ‘Welcome to the Centennial year. We under- stand that General Babcock, and not Archi- tect Clark, is the ecnstodian of the Cap. tol, and we doubt not thar, if it is practicable, he will have the building illu- minated. With this and such other demon- strations as may be improvised by patriotic citizens, the national capital may make a creditable display, after all. P.8.—1t will be s2en that steps have been taken to-day in the way of making a suita- ble demonstration bere. The District Com- missioners will have a salute of thirty-seven Suns fired at midnight, and the police and fre depariment authorities will do their share towards celebrating the owe ent. aa eee The Baltimore American publishes this morning &@ letter from Hon. Reverdy Joho ‘Son in reference to the charges made against Gen. Schenck because of bis connection with What is known as the “Emma Mine.” Mr. Jobnéon says that since his arrival in Lon- on he has endeavored to become accurately acquainted with all the circumstances of the transaction so far as our Minister to Great Britain was concerned with them, and “‘the Yesult is my perfeet conviction that there is no ground whatever for impeaching in the slightest degree General Schenck’s personal integrity.” The writer does not let the mat- ter rest here, but gives an elaboratestate- Ment of all the facts in thecase which led bim to this conclusion, and sums up as fol- lows: “In & word, then, what Noemie Schenck did was a mere business eatered into by him with a full cout, which he was authorized to entertain, that it would inure -t bis profit, and this must have been the case with ail the original stockholders. So far from its baving turned out profitable, it has been and is quite otherwise, but the General bears the loss with the firmness which belongs to bis character, and without the least consciousness that ‘he has done Snything legally or morally wrong, although, as he, himself, stated in his testimony. he pa gy 2 thought that, in becoming a director, he bad madea mistake. It must be @ satisfaction to him that his government bever censured him, but,on the contrary, has acquitted him of any’ wrong intention, and retained perfect coniidence in his ability 88 @ Minister and his integrity as a man.” Mr. Johnson's statement will haye some Weight, but will hardly serve to clear the matter up to the *~, tistaction of the public. ~~ eee ew York Herald having put every- ody”, hair on erd with its porten ‘mations of war with §: enough tosay that after all there is no reason to apprehend any difficuities with that country.
