In @ long letter to Tw, Field and Farm, | Floyd Deyo, the owner of the hore Smali | Hopes, which trotted during the last, races of the Washington Driving Association, under | the name of Lapland, gives a history of bis | fall campaign. 9 many Of the places visited he charges collusion with the judges as well | | as the other horsemen, bat, as will be seen by the following extract, he makes no such | charge as to our Washington judges: “1 started for Washington, and got there cn Monday. On Tuesday there were only | two starters for the twenty-six race, and it | | required three. and all agreed for me to start if I would not show in front; so I started, and got three against Joe Brown and Tanner Boy. Next day, Wednesday, came the twen- | ty-pine race, with four starters, Planter, | Webber, bri rand Lapland. Bat hefore starting Lapland was protested by White, the owner of Draper; 80 and denied the protest. But they did not have the blank forms, as I bad found they have in ail other places. and I could not sign it, but expressed my willing’.ess to doso, aad a‘ter a little talk they allowed me to start. | First heat we got away well together, and I pulled «}! the way round and was obliged to make bim leave his fect near the siand to keep him from winning the heat. The Draper party knew I could win, and if I won one more heat the race would be settled, and they agreed ifI would pull they would pall and lel Pianter win that heat, and by very hard pulling we jet Planter win In 37, and the race ‘was postponed until 2 the next day, and, as it was better for our party to let Planter win, I let them fight the heat, but Planter could not win. Draper won, which gave him two heats, and it would not doto let him win another, as that would finish it. So I stayed Well up this heat, and pulled out and gave Planter my place, and at the head of the stretch I saw he could not win, sol went along and won the beat. and race.’ But some of the veys bad lost, and such anothers howl- ing you never heard. The noted Alex. Lewis, who is always jobbing, was in the box to lose, and he was bound to have the pools off, but the poolseller had declared the pools to go regardless of protest; so they were paid. Next morning Lewis made affidavit that he knew Lapland, &c., but It was too late, and it only showed his fraudulent intentions, for, if he knew him, why did he not make this oath sooner, and not trot in league with a ranger. ——_o—_— THE FoURTH ScHoor Districr this sea- son appeared unusually rich in Chris gifts presented by pupils to their teac: The “first grade,” or infant schools, seem t overflow, as the following variety of g1fis to Miss Sailie H.
