EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON: FRIDAY......... December 24, 1875. CROSBY GS. HOYES........ Editor. Bes” Circulation More than Three Times that of any other Daily Pa- per pub&shed in Washington, and therefore by far the Best Adver- | tising Medium in the District of Columbia. No paper will be issued from this office to- morrow, Christmas Day. of 1870 places the value of ebureh property in the United States at the enormous sum of $354,483,581. In his last annual message the President makes the rather remarkable statement that the value of such property now is $1,000,000,000, or, in other words, that its value has increased nearly threefold in five years. The Presi- dent farther predicts that in 1590 the value of such property will have increased to $3,000,000,000. There is an apparent contra- diction in the President’s language when he says he would tax all church and corporation property, “exempting only the last resting- place of the dead, and possibly, with proper restrietions, chureh edifices,” and subse- quently when he recommends in his summary that “all church property shalt bear its own yroportion of tax- ation.” A reporter of the New York Trimes, who recently conversed with Rev. Dr. Tiffany, formerly the President's pastor tn this city, inferred that the Presi- cents private convictions are expressed in his summary where he cays all church prop- erty should be taxed, and this is the view now gererally held by fair-minded people. Reliable statistics in regard to the value of ehureh edifices in New York city for the year 1#74 show that the value of edifices of the Protestant Episcopal denomination ‘was $7,500,000; Reman Catholic, $5,109, Pres- byterian, £4,550,000; Reformed, $2.32 Methodist Episcopal, $2,161,500; Baptist, $1,705,000; Hebrew, $1,515,009: all other de- rominations, $3,618,500; makinga total of $23,800,000 invested in church edifices in New York city alone. The whole chureh property Of the city is said to be worth from $50,000,000 To $90,000,000. In an article read by James Paeton before the “Free Religious Association,” of New York, in 1873, on the subject of taxing chureh property, the speaker, who probably reflected the views of that body, opposed all exemp- ons, and in the course of his remarks said that before the French revolution two acres out of five In all Fraace belonged to the ebhureh. The church was so good a jadge of land that in a large number of parishes the church’s two scres were worth more than the people's three. England was in alike condition before Heary VIII. broke up the ecclesiastical institutions and secularized their property—that is, stopped exempting it from taxation. The Methodist Episcopal denomination includes far more members than any other in the United States, and in 1570 owned prop- erty valued at $69,554.121, which was almost 10,000,000 more than the whole property of the Roman Catholics at that time, $15,000,000 more than the property of the Presbyterians, and $28,900,000 more than the property of the Baptists. The Rev. Dr. Curry, editor of the Ciristion Advocaie, who ts conversant with the prevaliing opinion among Methodist clergymen, heartily concurs with the Presi- dent in his belief that chureh property, ex- cepting cemeteries and possibly church edi- fices, should be taxed, but is not prepared to say that in his opinion all church property should pay for its protection. The Baptists, in 1570,-according to the cen- sus, Gwued property to the amount of $41,608,198. The Rov. Dr. Armitaze, of New York, a leading clergyman of this denomina- Uon, favors the taxation of all church prop- erty excepting cemeteries, houses of public Worship, and such church institutions as are not run for a fiscal revenue, and tend to diminish pauperism by caring for persons who otherwise would be thrown upon the public for support. Reman Catholic church property in 1:70 was estimated at $60,995,556. Promineat clergymen of that denomination oppose the taxation in question, holding as a rule that this is a matter for the states to decide. The Congregationalists ia 1370 owned ebureh property amounting to $23,059,495 Several prominent clergymen of this denom- imation in New York have expressed them- selves in favor of the President's recommen- dation. In 1870 the Protestant Episcopal church owned church property amounting in value $0 $6,514,519. While there ts a difference of pivion among the clergy of all deaomina- tons im regard to this taxation, it 1s pretty safe to estimate that a large majority both of the clergy and the laity concur in the President's views. ee Reierring to the late expiosion of a gas main in Boston @ New York paper does not remember any similar accident, and thinks it improbabie that epe wilj occur again within this cealury. An éxplosion very sim- #385 to the one in Boston, but happily unat- ‘ended » fatal resulls, occurred at the Capitol building, in this city, last spring while the Senate was in special session. A large main running under the heavy marbis floor in one of the lower corridors exploded with a loud noise, producing a temporary consternation among the Senators in tue chamber and others in the build: Itap- pears that this main leaked, and a workm4u Wwasdirected to find the point at which tho gas escaped. In orter to do this he took a lighted candle and carefully examined the main. The explosion which ‘ollowel whea the escaping gas came in contact with the Light must have convinced him that he had found the leak. Fortunately he was not in- jared, the whole force of the explosion golag upward and bodily hoisting the marble biocks of fhe floor above from their places. Theexact cause for the Boston explosion seems to be involved in doubt, but it is gen- erally believed that it was causei by igal- tion from some source. -see- There is an absurd inconsistency in the statements that the President will parton Joyce, the convicted whisky “operator,” aud that Joyce in a recent conversation sald that “the entire Waite House, not excepting the President himself, will be scorched.” ‘Ths , Fmer statement bas been authorita- tively etradicted, and perhaps for that rea- son Joyce .8¢e8 Mt to rail against the Presi- dent. The natural inquiry which follows is, how do so many letters go astray? The question is answered by the Thin! As- | sistant Postmaster General in his last report | When he states that the indorsements made by postmasters on letters forwarded to the dead-letter office are (1) ‘‘misdirected,” (2) “illegible,” and (3) “dead.” These causes, he farther says, explain the non-delivery of a large number, while the migratory habits of many of our own Citizens, and the thousands of emigrants who arrive annually and mova about from place to place seeking homes, and either fail to give their proper address when writing to their native land. or remove to &@ remote locality before their correspond- ence is received, will account for the bai- ance. ——__+ +e -—____ The Norwegians havea pretty custom on Christ mas day of putting sheaves of grainon gables, gateways, and doors, as an offering to the birds.
