ER ee EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON TUESDAY....... November 30, 1875. CROSBY 5S. NOYES........Editor. | Be Circulation More than Double that of any other Daily Paper published in Washington, To Advertisers. In order that the large and rapiclly increasing edition of THE STAR may be delivered to its car- riers and served to subscribers at a reasonable hour each day, it is necessary to close the forms @s nearly as possible at 3 o'clock p.m. Adverti- ers are therefore requested to send in their adver- tisements not later than TWELVE O'CLOCK. If recetved after this hour there is great danger that, with the exception of imperative cases,—such as Deaths, Lost, de.,—they cannot appear until the Tolowing day. Asa rule men seek the offices and not the Offices the men. The office of Commissioner of Indian Affairs may be said to be an ex- ception to this rule, since, to use a homely phrase, it goes a begging. There are, it is true, many ambitious gentlemen who be- lieve that they would fill the bill. The mat- ter of compensation ($3,000 per annum) is of Secondary consideration with them; they reabsorbed by a patriotic desire to serve their beloved country and solve once and forever the vexed Indian problem. Gener- ally, however, the appointment of such dis- interested patriots would be an irreparable Diunder. The office requires not oniy unim- peachable integrity and a high order of in- telligence, but first-class business ability. Beset, as it is, with shrewd and experienced contractors, charged as it is with the pur- chase of millions of dollars worth of Indian supplies yearly, and finally being located thousands of miles away from its wards, incumbent must of necessity blend with in- telligence and extraordinary business tact the firmness of character of a Jackson him- felf. It is to be hoped that Secretary Chand- Jer will find a man of this character and one to whom the mere matter of salary is no ob- ject. Itisa little strange that the compen- Sation attached to this office—one of the most important under the government should be much smaller than the sal: Ss of most other burean officers. — should remedy this at a There was undoubtedly a gi ot deal of cheating on both sides at the fail elections in the large cities, but it would appear that Baltimore deserves the more or less proud title of being the banner city in the matte: Of intimidation of voters, ballot-box stuff 1g and life political rascalities. T ers” who were the sufferers there, do 1 seem fuelined to let the matter rest. T: Will hold a mass meeting at the Maryland Institute to. night for the purpose of deman- ing the removal of the police commissioners “who placed their authority at the service of the law-defying and law-breaking mob of outlaws who ruled the city on election day,” and also to “demonstrate to the legislature that the vote of Baltimore city should be thrown out on all rules of law and eqaity, and her nominal senators and delegates re- fused admission to the seats to which they have no jast claim.” There is a good deal ot feeling throughout the country part of Mary- land in regard to the wholesale frauds in Baltimore city, whereby the vote of the State at large in favor of reform was swamped. and the legislature will probably be inclined to give an attentive hearing to the testimony in regard to these outrages. ———__-+e-- The Cuban Independence Society in New York have adopted a novel mode of raising money to fit ont another Cuban expedition. Ata meeting of the society on Sunday night ‘@ member proposed that every Cuban clgar- maker in the United States be requested to manufacture into cigars $5 worth of tobac- ¢0. This could be sold for about $25, and the gum which would thus be realized would pe applied to the fitting out of another expedi- Uon to Cuba. The motion wa: adopted, and acommittee appointed to confer with the cigar makers. It is not easy to see why the cigar makers are called upon while nothing is said about collecting funds from Cubans employed in other vocations. ——____-ee- — Mr. Martin F. Tupper, believing that ii re- mains for a Britisher to evolve the coming American drama, has written, so says Col. Forney in one of bis letters, such a produc- tion, which he will bring out in the United States next year. It is entitled “Washing- ton,” and the represented are ‘Washington, Franklin, Patrick Henry, John Adams, Benedict Arnold, Lafayette, Andre, &c. If Tupper’s drama is as heavy as his poems he will put his audience into a cen- tennial sleep. ——__—_—see--___ Pinebback is en route to Washington to se- cure a seat in the Senate and his “back pay,” amounting to $20,000. One week from Mon- day next is the day assigned for a continua- tion of the discussion of his case. As we have suggested before, let short work be made of it. The subject is worn thread-bare, and it is impossible to see how anything mew can be said on He. The Heraut's Stanley cc continually bears in mind the dying words of Marmion, and woe betide the unlucky native who bars his pro- gress. He is literally carrying the war into Africa, and the way in which the savages drop dead from the shots of his trusty re- volver must bea sight to see. ———-ee- —___ Ia Boston 1 women have proved their entire fitness as school officers. The reform of put- ting them on the school board was brought ‘about after much opposition, but they have discharged their duties with such fidelity, unselfishness and wisdom that their re-elec- tion Is pretty generally called for in Boston. — Bees sa DBESSMAKING AT MISS B nov30-eo6t™ TES cap have t CUT and Basted ‘D st Miss ae Tvca® 923 7th street nov3)-2t* pene oR AB.
