Considering the possibility (rather remot it is true,) of the acquisition of Cuba by the United States it may be interesting to view ‘the ground where our possessions lie—per- haps. The much coveted island measures Tully 7# miles in length anda little more than 4) in average breadth, with an area of 30,000 square miles. The barbors of Havana, ‘Matanzas and Santiago, are among the best in the world. Beginning from the southeast the Copper Mountains ron nearly the whole Jength of the island, culminating in an atti- tude of 6,800 feet. The cultivated portions of the lower tracts produce abundantly corn, Tice, yams, bapanas, sugar, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cocoa, and iud!go; while the un- cultivated districts in the rear, countless herds of cattle. The elevated regions of the Copper Mountains, besides teeming with the metal from which they derive their name, aud here and there producing gold, silver, and fron, are covered with dense forests, in Which besides shipbuilding timber, palms, plantain, and mahogany are conspicuous. In 1350 the population numbered 564,698 Whites, 216,176 free people of color, and 62,57 slaves. The productiveness of the island may be inferred when it is stated that her exports in 1855 amounted to It is said that Paul Morphy, the once famous chess player, is now a hopeless ma- biac in New Orleans. A genuine 2€ck for #24 on the Security Bank was some time ago given in change by a storekeeper for asi bill. Subsequently the check was raised to ¢1,222.55,and the indorsement al- tered. The holder then purchased gold for the check of a Wall street firm, after the lat- ter had sent it to the Security Bank, which certified it. Subsequently the same bank paid the amount to the National Bank of the Republic, which had the cheek, but find- ing out that the check was a forgery apptied to the latter bank for the difference, which Was refused. The report of the: secretary of the Nati Grange of the Patrons of E body is now in session at Louisville, will Show that up to September 30th last 21,299 charters or dispensations hai been granted to subordinate granges. About 400 granges ave been disbanded, and about 3,900 are de- dinquent in the payment of dues. This leaves in operation 20,200 granges. The membership wf granges varies all the way from 25 to 250 ach. Giving each grange a membership of 100 would make a total membership of 2,089,000.
