TUESDAY. November 9, 1875. The Siuger Will Case. UNLOOKED-FOR ADJOURNMENT OF THE OCEEDINGS—RUMORED OFFER TO Com- PROMISE REJECTED—A_ _MYSTERIOCS YOUNG MAN FROM THE WEST. The Singer will case did not mate mach Progress 9 the surrogate’s court at White *iains, N. Y., last Friday. Before the hoar appointed for resuming the proceediogs touching the legal status of Mrs. Mary Ana Foster, the contestant, had arrived, Sarro- gate Coffin received a telegram from counsel for the executor, setting forth that an en- agement in another court prevented them rom attending, and that in consequence aa adjournment had been agreed upon betweea themselves and the ing counsel. It bas been asceriained, from what are considered authentic sources, Wat counsel for the legatens have intimated a desire to compromise w: contestant by paying her $200,000 out of the estate, and tat the intimation bas bad only the effect of eucour- aging her in her litigious determination to secure about $4,000,000, which she, as the alleged widow of the testator, claims to be ber rightful due. But if many-tongued ro- mor is to be credited, additional claimants tg participation in the estate may appear at any moment. The testator was @ man of noted laxity of morals. Under the terms of the will some twenty or more of his offspring by divers and sundry mothers are entilied on an average to aout $200,000 each. There have been and are other children of the deceased whose names are not to be found in the testamentary doc ument, and {{ would not be surprising if, beiore the present legal controversy bs Closed, his “sons should come from afar and his daugbters from the ends of the eartn,” to be present at and partake of the floal « sion and distribution of his immense ate. Notable among the spectators in court dur. ing the preliminary hearing of the case w & young man whohad apparentty seen a Ii Ue more than twenty summers. His well- tanned face and brawny hands bespoke fa- milierity with laborious outdoor employ ment. He was observed to pay the closest attention to the proceedings, @nd partica- larly to the arguments advanced by con- testants’ counsel during the desulto.y bate. He was evidently & totai stranger, not speaking to or being addressed by any’ one in the court-room. After the adjournment, and wien on the way to the railroad depo! he approached the writer with an air of familiarity, and on being promptiy interro- gated as to his identity, merely replied that he had traveled night and day from Kansas in order to be present at the proceedings, as he had an interest in the estate. Having been asked as to What he based his claim on, this mysterious young man said, in @ half whisper, “They Will find out who Iam soon enough,” and then bounded across tle street. The Surrogate named Monday, the 1th inst., as the day on which a farther hearing in the case will take ¥. pay A FALL FROM THE DoME OF THE Memo- | RIAL BUILDING.—Yesteraay afternoon the | workmen and others in sight of the Memo- rial Building at the Ceatennial groands were horrified to see one of the workmen on that butiding, while walking around the top of the dome, suddenly miss bis footing and come’ whirling down’ through the air, his body making several turns as he dessended to the earth beneath. A sickening feelin Was experienced by every one who witnessed the terrible sight as his body strack th ground with a thud that seemed terribly joud and distinct, and might, indeed, ha been heard for a considerabie distance.” Still more horrible was the sight as they gathered vat the mass of bruised and broken hu nanity that not a moment before had b: a stalwart man, fall of life and vigor, the promise of many years yet before him. His body was mashed almost beyond reco: nition, aithough there were a few pulsations of life remaining in him. He was uncon- scious, however, of course, and it is probable was before he reached ‘the ground. His bruised body was tenderly taken up, attempt was made to take it to the Presb terian Hospital, though it was evident f was far beyond all human aid, bat before aching the institution what little life re ned in him had passed away. The na of the unfortunate was Kobert Miner, bis age was twenty-four years, and he ix sald to be a resident of Buffalo, N.Y.
