AN INDEPENDENT OPINION AnovuT THE PRESIDENT AND THE WHISKY RinG.—It is quite conceivable that this attitude of the President is an astounding and demoralizing surprise to the corruptionists; that they have been counting, if worst came to worst up: n his protection; and that this “going back’ on them has filed them with equal couster- nation and resentment. It is quite possible that the threat to implicate his nearest rela- tives is at once strategic and vindicitive—an attempt to force a compromise, or, that faii- ing, to “get even.” There have been intima. tions of some such move almost from the first. Se gee LORD MAYOR'S DAY IN LONDON. — 9 THE LOSS OF THE PACIFIC. Twe Hundred People Drowned— Thrilling story of the sole survivor. San FRs NCIsCo, Nov. 8.—A dispaten irom Port Townsend this evening says: tlenry F. Jelly, the supposed sole survivor of the steamship Pacific disaster, who was brought here yesterday by the ship Messenger, 1s in @ wretched condition, baving been on @ raft thirty-six hours before he was picked up. He says the Pacific collided with some other vessel, whose light he saw, but in his inter- view with Captain Giekey, the master of the Messenger, he made no meition of the lights of @ vessel, and some persons think he is laboring under @ haliucination as to that. Experienced navigators here think it is more likely that she struck @ sunken rock. The Story of the One Man Saved Ont of 200 \e. Jelly makes a statement to the following effect: I took a eabin passage on the Pacific frorh Victoria, leaving about a quarter past 9 o'clock Thursday morning, the 4th inst., with about 200 people on board; steamed ali cay against a southeastern gale. The crew were constantly pamping water into the boats to trim the ship. The boats abaft the poco boxes had po ears in th: Th ts had oars. Between 8 ar the evening, while in bed, 1 heard A CRASH, and felt a shock, as if we had struck a rock; heard something fall, as If rocks had falien on the starboard bow. The bell struck to and “go ahead.” I went on “All right,” and “we ugk a vossel;” saw several ligits at ; they were colored, but I paid but little attention to them; returned to the cabin; noticed that the ship took a heavy list to poxt; went on deck to the pilot house and heard som* one say: “SBE 1§ MAKING WATBR VERY FAST.” The captain coming out of his room, I asked him if there were any blue-lights or guns. He said the blae-lights were ia the pilot house; got them and burned five; no- Heed the engines still working, bat noone was at the wheel; went to the starboard side, forward of the paddle-box, where a num. ber of men were trying to get a long-boat launched, but could uot; went to the port boat. forward and helped five or six women into it; tried to get the boat off, but conid not move it; there were about twenty women in it, Neard that the boats abaft the paddies had been got off, but did not see them, think it was aboutan hour after the steamer streek when she listed so much; the port boat was in the water; I was in that boat and eut it loose from the davits; the boat filled and turaed over; I got on her bottom aud helped several op with me. Immediately after THE STEAMER SEEMED TO BREAK IN TWO, fore And aft. The smoxestack fell anit strack r boat, and the steamer sank. I think about all the women were in the bot, and I fear Ul were all drowned wheu the boat upret. This was about 19 o'clock in the eve- ning. The night was not dark nor the sea very rorgh, but there was a fresh breeze afterwards. I left the bottom of the boat and with another man climbed ON TOP OF THE PILOT HOUSE, floating near. Next morning I got some life preservers floating pear the hou_e, aud with thelr ropes lashed myself and coinpanion to the house; saw three .afts; the first had one man on it, the next bad three men and a woman; could not make ont the third raft, owing to the distance, except that there were people on it; think we were thirty or forty intles south of Cay Flattery when the ves- sel sunk; passed the light on Tattoosh Island between 4 and 5 o'clock in the evening. I and my companion were on the pilot house allof Friday until about 4 p.m., waen he died; cut him loose; the sea was running very high all day, the waves washing over us. I sighted a vessel and called to her, and heard persons On the other rafts calling, but the vessel did not come rear us. Friday night there was but little wind until a. m., when the wind and sea rose. I was then within a mile of the shore off Vancouver's Island. 1 sighted two vessels on the Ameri- can shore, which passed me. About 190'clock Saturday a. m. the Messenger picked me up. HENRY F. JELLY. The Excitement in San Frai There was great excitement in this city on the receipt of the news, and the telegraph and newspaper offices and merchants’ exchange were besieged by per- fops who bad friends o: relatives on board. No one seems to know the names of mem- bers of the Hurlbut and Rockwell troupe, but it is supposed that Fanny Marstoa was one of them, and that the others were per- formers picked up in this part of the eoun- try. The steamer Los Angelos will be dis- patched on her arrival to-morrow losave the survivors, if there areany. Jelly says there was no terror or confusion on ihe of the eee and that if boats could have been launched and ey, manned, and as the sea Was com; ively smooth, all on board might have been saved. The Ca; of the Lost Steamer. it is stated that Capt. Jeff. D. Howeil, of tbe lost steamer Pacific, was a brother in- law of Jefferson Davis, and was formerly an Oficer of the confederate navy. He was a young map, but was supposed to be au ex perienced navigator. . ———_.———— ANOTHER DISASTERS AT SEA. The Stenmer Waco Barned. Bostor, Nov. 9—A special dispatch ro- ceived in thin city says the steamer City of Waco, from New York for Galveston, was burned outside tbe bar at Gatveston on the morning of the sth. The crew, officers and gers took to boats, and were last seen ring westerly. A tug had been sent out. NEw York, Nov. 9.—Additional intelli- gence received here in regard to the steamer City of Waco states that she arrived outside the bar at Galveston yesterday p.m., and anchored. At 1 o'clock a.m. she took 3 o'clock her passengers, officers. and crew to boats. Owing to the high sea,no assistance could be sendered by other vessels. When last seen the boats containing the passengers were standing down the coast in a cys age tion. A steam-tug is cruising ow the bar in search of the boats, Africa Discoveries by Stanley.
