_EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY....... October 23, 1875. published in Washington. Aboat Pennsylvania. “As Pennsylvania goes so goes the Union,” bas long been a@ familiar cry, but Ohio now plumes herself that it is a cry that will be heard no more, and that to her has been rele- gated the important trust of settling in Octo- ber the issue of the general campaign. Still the Ohio papers are willing to concede some Weight to the action of Peusayivanie, and the Cincinnati Qommercial has sen’ jal over the late “banner-state” to sede upon the political situation. He writes that the ‘Obio election has opened the eyes of the democratic leaders in Pennsylvania so wide ‘that they will neveragain be blinded by the dust of the inflationists. The oniy trouble is that the republican majority in Obio is scarcely large enough to flatten out the rag- Toney men. Congressman Kelley will re- bound from it like a rubber ball, and ina - few days bis peculiar theories about the ex- pansion of the currency will be as elastic as ever. The inflation theory has been mortally wounded in Obio, but it will die hard in Pennsylvania, although the politicians, as a class, have given it up as “clean gone.” Still, fe will be retained in it by a sort of galvanic process in the western counties, where it is claimed the people are mad for soft money. But in the eastern counties and in Philadelphia it is thoroughly defanct. ‘The cry now is that the state can be saved to the democrats only by changing front as rapidly as possible, and making a fight on administrative reform; this, the Commercial correspondent thinks, they shonld have done @t first, and that had they confined them- selves to this issue, and left all extraneous questions to take care of themselves, they might have carried the state by a large ma- jority. But having male the tremendous blunder of introducing the entirely unneces- sary issue of the money question, they can now hope, by dodging the issue which they have raised themselves. and turning to “re- form,” only toreduce by a few thousands the inevitable republican majority of the state. Aside from the inflation heresy the demo- crats have points of advantage in a strong ticket, while the republicans are weak in their cancidates all over the state. The peo- ple are tired of being ruled by political com- binations and professional politicians; and this gives the democrats unusual strength. But the great weakness of the democratic party in the state lies in the financial issue, which bas been driven like a wedge into all the traditions of the party, and has rent asunder all the issues’on which the party Was preparing to make a vigorous fight. As the ease stands now, the democratic leaders are placed in the unenviable position of be- ing forced, by the result of the Ohio election, to “hedge” on the financial question, and to ery specie payments, where a few days ago they cried Mr. Kelley's assignats. STATISTICS OF FAILURES —It is stated in a circular published by Dun & Co.'s Mercan- tile Agency on the 20th instant, that business failures in the United States from January 1 to September 30 of the present year have amounted to 5,334, with a total liability of $151,171.000. A comparative statement shows that the failures for a similar period in 1574 2mounted to $16,429,000, in and in 1872 to $90,794,000. year Maryland is charged with eighty-five With liabilities amounting to $9,321,656, nearly balf of which sum is involved in the ilure of Stirling, Ahrens & Co. In the Dis- trict of Columbia during the same period there were sixteen failures, liability $159, in Dela iavitty in Pennsylvania four hundred and ability £13,019,s5, in New York city five hundred snd forty-nine, Hability $51,996,250. The tendency of unwise credits is illustrated by “the failures in Canada, which jadicate that though the trade of the Dominion two years ago was very pros- perous, in the past nine months thirty in every thousand traters have failed, while the Bgures in the United States show that only eight In every thonsand have suc- cumbed, teaching the lessou that expansion an is delusive and dangeroas.— sun. If all the figures in this cireular are not more reliable than those ia relation to the District of Columbia, any illustrations drawn from them will hardly convey a lesson worth heedir It is news to the people of this District that sixteen basiness failures have oceurred here in the period specified. nineteen, aliens “ How sweet it is for brethren to dwell to- gether in unity.” Pope Pius the Ninth and King Victor Emmanuel, between whom it bas been believed no reconciliation could ever be effected, have been carrying on a kindly correspondence relative to the sup- pression of certain houses of ill-repute in Rome. The King, in reply to the Po} , Who addresses him as “most illustrious son,” Fays he will “gladly comply with the pious instrnetions of his holiness,” and subscribes himself “ your very devoted son.” The tone of the correspondence would indicate that a final reconciliation is not impossible. ——+<ee The District Commissioners to-day issued 2 Warrant for payment of the November in- Werest (in gold) on the 30 year bonds of the Jate corporation of Washington, and the in- terest will be paid without rebate on and after Monday next.
