_ WASHINGTON: _SATY RDAY........0ctober 6, 1875. CROSKY &. NOYES... -- FAitor. Be Circulation Yore than Double that of any other Daily Paper ___ published in Washington. ‘The telegrams from Ohio in yesterday's STAR mentioned reporisof fraudulent voting in Wood county, in that state, without stat- ing which party was chargei therewith. ‘The matter is explained ina special to the New York Times from Columbus, which says: “A telegram from E. 8. Dodds, who figures As & gas commissioner by appointment from Governor Allen, was directe Thompson, chairman democratic committee, saying: *Would 1,000 majority in Wood county help us out?’ ‘This telegram fell into the hands of | Capt. Wykof, chairman ¢ 2 republican | committee, and shortly afterward he came wr: It into possession of Tuompson's ans ys much gool’ Present news from Toledo that gross frau ts had been Perpetrated in Wood county, ani an enor- mous vote— 3.000—returr.ed.” The object of the reported frauds was rep- Tesented to be the securing of t democratic | state senators in the Lucas district. This, it was thought at the time, would give one democratic majority ia the senate, which tries contested elections of state officers ‘The next move would have been to get up a contest on charges of frau, and yote Allen and bis ticket in. It is stated in this connection that not less than two thousand spurious votes have been fuserted in the little village of Perrysbare, in Wood county, that last vear polled but m4 votes, all told. The Ohio S8a’e Journal says that “the secret of the astonishing reduction in Hayes’ majority from estimates and con- cessions based on Tuesday night’s dispatehes is here disclosed. Four thousand fraudulent democratic votes have been cast in Wood county, and how many in other counties may be inferred. The number probably depends on the ‘orders received from Dodd and Thompson,’ and perhaps other chosen eusto- dians of Governor Alleu’s fortunes. Since this swindle has been detected it is almost impossible not to believe that others, possi- bly of much greater magnitude, have been perpetrated.” Of course these charges are male from the republican side, and may prove to be mere heated partisan allegations, but they cer- tainly present a very serious and damaging aspect, and If the democratic state ecommit- tee can disprove them they should set about the work at once. Conceding all the weight that should ‘be long te the triumph over inflation in Ohio, it will not be safe for the friends of sound money to take it for granted that the na tional bettie is won, and that, for instance, @ victory is assured In Pennsylvania on the same iseue. The result in Onlo fs sufficient- ly close to show the popularity of “eheap money” amongst the ignorant and the un- employed, and it is evident that but for the extraordinary efforts made in the canvass there to educate the people of that state up to an appreciation of the folly of rag money promises of prosperity, Allen would have been elected by a large majority. As it was, such localities as Youngstown, where mills were lying idle and the promise was held out that inflation would set all the wheels of en- terprise in motion, went hotly wrong-heade4 On election day; and there are very many more “Youngstowns,”” and more idle mills and unemployed people in Penhsylvania than in Ohio. The work of educating all these discontented voters up to the tru meaning of inflation, cannot be entered upon too earrestly, or a day too soon. ——— The bringing of Indian delegations to Washington to treat with the‘Great Father” is baving a bad effect on the dusky warriors of other tribes who have never visite. the capital. Already since the Sioux delegations were here several deputations from other tribes have come on “on their own hook,” and without permission, to interview the government authorities in regard to griev- ances, fancied or real. If these unauthorized Savages are entertained at the expense of the government, and go back laden with pres- ents, it is but natural to suppose that Wash- ington will soon be overrun with Indian tramps from the far west, coming here for a share of Uncle Sam's good things. Tue ac- tion of the Indian Commissioner yesterday in declining to receive the Chippewa delega- tion was probably judicious, their case being different from that of the Pueblos, who came duly accredited by the head men of their tribe, and with the permission of theiragent ————_-+ ee -____ Gen. Butler can quote Scripture in support of his theories as well as other people. Be- fore opening his address on the financial question at the Cooper Institute night before Jast he read the following from the Acts of the A posties: “Then certain philosophers of the epicu- reans, and of the stoics, encountered Paul. And some said, “What will tnis babbier say?” others, ‘He appears to be a setter fort of — gods.” nd they took him and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, ‘May We know what this new doctrine whereof thou spesketh is? For thou bringest certain a B things to our ears; we woul Know, refore, what these things mean.” yr thus taken his text the General proceeded to expound his peculiar views on the currency. ——__——_-~ee-- After considerable bandying of figures, it Sppears that Hayes’ majority ia Hamilton county, Obto, is 564. ‘A MEETING — copumars TYPO- GBAPHICAL UNION, No. 104, will be at the ball ip, the Tribune Building THIS 1G. at 7.30 o cloci .
