WASHINGTON: WEDNEASDAY.... October 13, 1875. CROSBY 8. NOYES... BQ Circulation More than Double that of any other Daily Paper ___ published in Washington. The Elections Yesterday. The success of the republicans yesterday in Ohio can hardly be called a party victory, as the whole solid business Interests of the country were united in hoping, If not actively working for the defeat of Allen and the madness of inflation. The dispatches tell us, Indeed, that the sonud business democrats of Ohio voted aa open ticket yes- terday against Allen and rag money, and this is but an indication of the feel- ing everywhere throughout the country, amongst thoughtful. iatelligent men, with- out regard to party, npon this issue, ‘The result in Ohio and Iowa as well, where the question of sound money was also an issue, is a wholesome lesson to the speculat- ing politicians of both parties, teaching them not to underrate the intelligence of the People, and to suppose they can succeed with them by demagogue appeals and the clap- trap of cheap money. It was by an accident, perhaps, that the republicans of Ohio didnot get tarred with the same inflation stick, bat they are now committed to sound money, and bave also learned a te: Taflatioz may be said to be dead, for no party will care to burn its fingers with it hereafier. The dethocrats of Pennsylvania, to be sure, will 0 into their election weighted down with a rag-money plank, and will no doubt be beat- en with it, as they deserve to be, but that it is to be hoped will be the end of it, and here- after parties organizing for victory will be sure, as a matter of policy, #& well as princ!- ple, to make @ stand in behalf of public hon- esty, the public credit. and sound mouey. —__—_<s--_—— Mayor Wickham, of New York, is making apparently a genuine effort to purify the Police system in that city, and with that view has written a letter to the board of Police commissioners sharpiy arraigning them for their failure to perform their duties, and calling upon them to resign. He says the police force is notoriously inefficient, and charges that cases requiring the prompt at- tention of the board have frequently been ignored. He forwards a copy of a present- ment found by the grand jury, which sets forth @ disgraceful condition ofaffairs. The presentment states that the jury has indicted more than twenty persops for murder in the first degree; that citizens feel insecure in view of the inefficiency of the police; and that cool and deliberate murters are com- mitted, and the guilty perpetrators escape Without detection or punishment. Under the circumstances the commissioners can do nothing else than resign the positions they have so inefficiently filied, in order that the entire police system 2 may be be reorganized. The busizess of the C1 Chesapeake a and Ohio canal in the way of coal saipments still shows an increase over last year of 36,031 tons, and should the canal remain open as late as last year this Increase will be materi- ally swelled. The total amount shipped by canal from Cumberland last year up to Oc- tober 9 was 504,071, and up to the same date this year 570,135 tons. The shipments by rail and canal show a falling off of 36,334 tons as compared with last year. Tbe shipments by canal this week will doubtless be less than usual, owing to the epizootic, which has ap- peared among the mules. oo -—___ Contrary to expectation, the percentage of increase in the receipts of the Post Office De- partment for the last fiscal year was but about one and a half per cent. The usual Percentage yearly has been about five per cent. As the statement published in yester- day’s STAR shows an excess of expenditures over receipts amounting to the snug little sum of 26,000,000, it is evident that it will be some time before the department will be able to support itself. a The withdrawal of Gen. Bartell as the democratic candidate for lieutenant-governor Of Massachusetts is calculated to weaken the ticket. The Boston Herald regardei hi nomination ‘‘as the smartest and most pro- gressive act of the Massachusetts democrats since the war.” ——__—_—_~<ee--____ The Tammany convention in New York city bas utterly disregardet public senti- ment there by refusing to nominate Recorder Hacket, who bas been “an bovest and up- Tight judge,” and the terror of the criminal cfasses of New York. ——_—_—_- see Reports from Obio estimate the republican majority all the way from 5,000 to 40,000. As the counties to hear frem are mostly demo- cratic strong-hoids, the full returns may serve to whittle down the republican major- ities to ten thousand, or under. —_—__eo—___ The Republican's rag-baby is very goot— something out of the stereotype “rooster” routine.
