They claim that under the command of Aguilera, the new Cuban President, hacked by a patric army of 25,000 men well armed with artillery and small arms of the most approved fashion, and doubly protected by the mountainous mature of the country, it is utterly impossible for Spain to carry on the war longer with any hope of sue and assert that in all the recent engagements the insurrectionists have come off victors, and that within the last six months several important districts have been entirely recovered from the Spaniards. Fifteen thousand operatives and forty mills are stil idle at Fall River The vacation” which commenced six weeks ago continues, and meanwhile there is intense suffering “ Hungry and poorly Writes a correspond- ent, “ haunt the rooms of the societies, hotels, nd stores, asking for relief, aud at every corner on every street, (lozens of sad-looking men stand gazing about them with their hands in their pockets.” This is a sorrowful Picture, and the question naturally arises, ‘was the strike a judicious one in view of all the circumstances of the case? Six weeks ago the manufacturers proposed a reduction of ten percent. in wages in consequence of the dullness of trade i the falling off of Profits. The operatives declined to accept the proposed reduction, and agreed to a “vacation” (in reality a sirike) of thirty days, by the end of which time, it appears, they hoped considerable stock on hand would be disposed of and their employers Would be compelled to give them their old prices. Ua fortunately for them their expec! ng Were not realized, and when a compromise was proposed by two divisions of the operatives the employers met them with the reply that the demand for their cotton and print cloths Was still so light that they could not afford to give them more than the price offerel when they struck, viz., twenty-four insteat of twenty-seven cents per “cut.” The em ployers say that if their former employes Will consent to this they will reopen their mills and go on, making only the barest profit. They further intimate that it m: be necessary to cut down prices still lower, should trade continue duli. They assert that the employes mistook the signs of the times When they struck, aud did not give due con- sideration to the condition of trale. Tuey stand ready to open their mills at the re- duced rates proposed, and will keep t closed only for a certain time, when they Will reopen with non-union hands. This is a sad state of affairs, and at the Present time there seems no hope of anal justment. By the strike monthly wages amounting to $200,000 have been lost to the town and trades people, while 10,000 of capital lies idle aud unproductive.
