If this purpose carried into effect a very grave mistake will be committed. So far as Mr. Beecher’s con- Sregation and large circle of personal friends in and elsewhere are concerned, no such demonstration ts needeed to show the hold be has upon them; so far as the general public fs concerned, it will not have the de- sired effect. On the other hand, what is said and done on that occasion can scarcely fail to cail out criticisms, facts, and counter ex. Gen. Thomas L. Young, the republican nominee for lieutenant governor of Ohio, In his first campaign speech at Columbus the other evening, is reported to have “favored hard money and opposed a division of the school fand between Catholies and Protestants.” It having been reported that the clerzy of Rochester, N. Y., indorsed the recant action of the board of educatios prohibiting ali reli- ious exercises 1n schools, they hare signed @ manifesto saying that they have no idea that the course taken will conciliate the ene- mies of the public school system, and they add: “We utter on behalf of the religious people of this city, who are outraged by this Procedure, our distinct and solemn protest against it age Georgia does seem to have ena mach ruined by the reconstruction policy, of which some of her sister states complain. Accord- ing to the Chicago Times, he expresses the opinion that President Grant wil! be renom- inated on a hard-money platform, as that is one of the circumstances under which, ac- cording to his letter, he would deem it an imperative necessity for him to accept. He furthermore says that David Davis will be the democratic candidate, on a rag-money platform, and that greenbacks will win over gold. This statement is to be received with some allowance. The first query is as to whether Mr. Carpenter really expressed the opinion attributed to him; and the second is, what it is worth if he did. -<e2-—____ The inflation democrats are not all con- fined te Obio or even to the west. In the southern states are many who think they will be richer if more notes are printed.
