WASHINGTON: MONDAY. July 19, 1875. CROSBY & NOYES... Average Daiiy Circulation, 14,500 | = a —=> The Star for the Summer. } Persons Waving the city for the summer or for | aay portion of @ may have THR STAR sent by mail, postoge prepaid, for mach period of time as they desire at the rate @f 15 cents per week, 60 comts per wonih, $1.80 for Uwee months, or 83 for siz months | '€ 87 Orciers wast tw oft casen be accompanied ty | the money, and "0 paper sent longer than paid for. | 1,060 Tombstones a Year, | The tnsane desire of the American people | to start newspapers Is pretty well shown by | the statistics of journalism in this country | for the year I& Notwithstanding the dis- | couraging facts that more than one thousand papers went Out of existence during the year; that many others were materially re- | ineed in size, that circulations generally have fallen off considerably; and that the expenses of publishing have largely increas- ed, while profits have greatly diminished, it yet appears that during the same period of time five hundred and sixty-four new papers have been established, or started, rather; for there is a great difference between 8 newspaper and etablishing one, as m ambitious gentleman has found to his cost. But the significant feature of this long ath roll is found net so much in the num ber of papers that have died during the past year as in the vast sum of money sunk in the various experiments. It is ascertained that In the aggregate about eight mi 2 Gollars have been lost to all parties inter- €sted in these defunet publications,—one Venture alone earrying down with it nearly i not quite half a milifon. Yet, in the face Of this melancholy exhibit, persons are still to be fonnd who are willing to risk their means In an enterprise that is always haz- ardous, and as a rule only moderately profit- able even when successful. For, while it is true that a few of the newspapers in some of the larger cities make money, and some of them a creat deal, it is equally true that a majority of the papers In the country make little or none. Indeed, the statistics show that the net profiton the whole eapital in- Vested In newspapers in the United States does not equal 1% percent. per annum, to say nothing of time and valuable services frequently given In sucha way that they cannot enter tnto the account. From this showing !t is clear that business men do not as a general thing go into news- Paper ventures on sonnd business principles, any more than they wonld regularly em- bark in the purchase of lottery tickets be- cause large prizes are occasionally drawn. This view of the case is borne out by the fact that a majority of the men who ran these thousand papers Into the ground either had & hobby or @ grievance of some kind, or @ special speetiative scheme to promote. The Test were mostly amateur journalists, who left other pursuits under the hallucination that they had peenliar gifts for newspaper management, or who were led away in the beginning of thelr career by the tgnis fatuus of fiterary ambition. An analysis of their Antecedents shows that of the number 25 were merchants, mostly with speculative tendencies, 315 school teachers, 90 lawyers, 10 farmers, and about 100 young men of no pre- vious occupation, who were set up in the business by indulgent parents or on their own inherited means. It is not surprising that they failed. In- deed it could bandly be otherwise with most of them. Successful newspapers can only beestablished nowadays by the expenditare ofa large amount of money, and in one of two Ways. Ist, by actaally paying up and putting in benk an almost exhaustless eapi- tal to be drawn upon, and printing an ex- pensive first class paper from the start, re- kandiless of profit or loss; and, 2d, by beginning in asmatl way aod changing the character and enlarging the scope of the enterprise as success may warrant. But In both cases Patience, industry, economy, and pluck are needed, together with such Knowledge of the Wants of the public amd experience in the business as would Justify expectations of success in any other pursuit ia life. In other ‘words, journa’ is @ profession, like any other profession, except that it requires more capital than any other, and to be prose- must La thoroughly This fact a creat many persons nd out after expending a great deal and money; but it seems there are few more left who are wilt cir knowledge In the same w: Why Cornell Wo tee the r tta at Saratoga the per corre nts have been busy why that crew failed to t out why the win- rs.
