Porvis states that all How- ard University owes to-day is $25,000. To meet this it has @ large landed estate which eventually will be valuable. The money that bas been borrowed has all been paid to this, and the trustees, at their recent meet- ing, passed a resolution directing their President fo run the Institution within Its income. The Doctor proceeds to point out the good work beir by the University for the €levation of the colored people, and asks, pointedly “Shall the work so well begun be stopped, and the institution be destroyed, becanse the ambition of an individual to be its president has not been gratified? I am sure the trink- ing people, those who love to see the cause of human rights progress, will say no. Mr. Langston’s defeat for the presidency was caused by the colored trustees, for they fre- quently passed severe criticism upon him to their associates. Even since the December meeting, to whieh he refers, one of them urged One of the white trustees to use his best endeavors to defeat him. “As to the Congregational church, too much cannot be said in its favor. With its Jeating members originated the idea of build- ing this University. It s the only orthodox church In this city where a colored man can €0 and be treated in common. There fs no peW in the lott or under the stairs for him there. Though Iam a Unitarian, it is but Just that I say this mueh for this chureh.” So the controversy stands between Mr. Langston and Dr. Purvis. But if we remem- ber aright, Fred Douglass made very nearly the same charges against the new manazge- ment of the University brought by Mr. Langston. Dr. Purvis can hardly claim that Mr. Douglass was actuated, too, by personal motives. On the whole, the prospects for a speedy and satisfactory settlement of the University troubles are not hopeful. —+.22- dove There are papers which have never a Sood word for any living man. Like tie strumpets of Greene street, who lean from their windows and assall every passerby With filthy epithets, reserving their choicest ickguardisms for those who will not notice them, they may easily make themselves public nuisances, but they ean do no one “ny actual injury.
