Persons leering the city for the summer or for any portion of & may have THE STAR sent by mail, postage prepaid, for mch period of time as they desire at the rate of 18 cents per week, 6O cents per month, $1.80 for Usree months, or 83 for six months. SF Orders mucat in all cases be accompanied by (ht moncy, Gnd no paper sent longer than paid for New Washington Tray The Baltimore American of yesterday says: “Tt was reported yesterday sylvania railroad company was off the limited express, for th does not pay.” Whetiver this report is true or not we ean- not say, but we shall not be surprised if it shall turn ont tobecorrect. Nor will it make very much difference to the business travel between the twoeities ifit be withdrawn; for, running upon the time it now does, it presents very few advantages ary train, which starts from either end of the route about an hour and a halfearlier. It is true, it gives the leisurely disposed pas- senger that much longer time to ready for starting. and sets him down at bis desti- nation about an hour ant a quarter sooner: but for T business purposes the time th: el at either end of the ue. The only thing to be is that it makes the transit thé Penn- ng to take son that it more rapidly. df Col. Scott wants to run a limited ex- press between the two capitals of the coun- try that would be a real acecommosation to the business public, and at the same time a source of protit to the railway companies in- terested, he should start it from both ends of the route at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and run it through to destination in seven hours,—with not more than five stops,— which woubl be at the rate of 52 miles an hour. This would give the passengers the better part of the business day before start- ing, and land them ateither terminus in sea- son for ordinary bed time, without loss of valuable time on the one hand, or loss of rest on the other. We hope that this experi- ment Will be tried before the idea of a limited express between the two cities is abandoned. We are satisfied that it would be a complete success in every respect. Water Waste. The New Yorkers are beginning to suffer from @ water famine through the waste of their aqueduet water, and curiously enough some of the New York papers that were so quick tocnarge all sorts of wrong motives upon our I)istrict authorities for taking meas- ures to stop the waste of water here are now urging the authorities of that city to use pre- cisely similar measures. It seems that New York to-day, with its million inhabitants, has about the same supply of water that London has with 3,300,000 inhabitants; and while the citizens of London are fairly sup- plied with water, New York is already com- plaining of a short supply. The explanation is to be found in the enormous waste of water iu New York, while in London tuis waste is rigidly prevented. There is already a clamor in New York for a larger water supply, at a cost of some ten millions of doliars, but the Proposition is stoutly opposed on the part of the tax-payers, and it is pointed out that the Waste of water is now more than the amount Uhat that large expenditure would add to the supply, and the demand ts made that In the interests of economy and the general public the waste should be stopped. The argument seems conclusive whether maintained In New York or Washington, and it is to be hoped the New York papers, So quick to imagine something wrong about the attempt of our authorities to stop the Waste of water, will look upon the question With more candor now that it comes home to themselves. —__-see-— = The Railroad Peace. Yesterday, for the first time since F Tuary, the cars of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad passed over the New Jersey roa! to and from New York, and tickets were sold and baggage was checked for New York at the President street depot of the Puiladel- pbia, Wilmington and Baltimore railroad in Eaitimore. as wel! as the Pennsylvania roais Union Depot. The travel was good over both roads. There was a slight ripple of misunderstanding. however, to disturb “the era of good feeling” supposed to have been reached by the rival roads. The Sun states nore and Potomac railroad still tickets to and from Wash- ington at 5 cents a single fare and 75 cents a round trip, although it was understood that ‘all reduced local and special rates’ were to «be advanced simultaneously,’ according to the careful wording of the written agreement between the general ticket agents of the Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio com- panies. In this agreement it was specially stated that for opera and theatrical com- panies, and base bal! clubs. not less than ten in number, the fare between Baltimore and Washington was to be fixed at $1 each single nd $175 each round trip.
