rs FOR RENT AND SALE. _| 4 EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: April 27, 1875. Average Daily Circulation, i, 628 The imn © te errible smash upon t Potomac Ratlrod last evening ya ble: triminal care- lessness or disobedien of its employes, but t ul that lies the sig- nifieant fact that the line between this city and Baltimore consists of but a single track. ‘That any company should undertake todo a first-class business between two populous cities for more than three years of heavy travel and frequent and fast trains with but @jsingle track seems almost incredible, and that a wealthy corporation should force over such a line the immense passenger travel between Washington and New York is hardly less than criminal. ‘We venture to say that no Metitgent pas- senger ever rides in one of the fast trains of the Baltimore and Potomac road without apprehension of just such a disaster as oc- curred last evening, and that one has not occurred long ago, and with much more ter- rible results, is due rather to good Inck than toa due regard on the part of the managers for life and limb. It 1s now nigh time that the proper remedy be applied, aud a second track should be put down at If it is not, the company need not be surprised if it loses both the patronage and goot will of the public ders on the part on = sse-- _ A staple subject for comment by t more press is “the Jones’ I 4ts discussion editorially usurps a large a no doubt by t me the Balti moreans had become ad with it. Washington had a pet once in the shape of a canal rur through central portions of the city, and filled with an almosi Stagnant mass of liquid corruption from which miasmatic vapors cont as- cended to poison the atmosphere and swell the mortality list. For years it seemed to be the impression of our citizens that this pesti- Iential nuisance coult be talked out of exist- ence, and plans without number were sug- gested for itsabatement. Nothing was done, however, until a few years ago when the authorities thought the time for action had come, and turned the reeking stream of pol- lution into a monster sewer, thus utilizing and abating the nuisance at the same time. Let our Baltimore neighbors imitate the ex- ample of Washington in this respect, stop tatking about “Jones’ Falls” and the “Basin nuisance,” and dosomething. Dam the falls, confound the basin, clean it out if necessary; do something. A little more practice and less theory is what is wantel. see: The “exposition” fever has finally reached South America, and Chili holds an inter- national exhibition this year. The authori- ties of that country exhibit much enterprise in the matter, and have earnestly invited the United States to participate. They are especially desirous of obtaining. if possible, a full representation of the educational status of the United States, but as Congress made no special provision for our participa- tion, it is not likely they will be entirely gratified. The Commissioner of Education has issued a circular of information relative to the exhibition, and which has been for- Warded to all prominent educators and school Officials, expressing the hope that they will contribute something towards the educa- tiova! rspresentation, and offering te for- ward all reports to Santiago, where the ex- position will be held. In this way it ishoped & partial representation, at least, will be se- cured + eee- Here is the opinion of a respectable meiical body, the Rhole Island Medical Soeiety, on certain vexed questions in the management of public schools. Resolutions recently adopted by the society dteclare that the pupils Of the public schools should not maintain the same position more than half an hour at @ time; that no child should be admitted to the schools, as now conducted, under seven years of age; that under twelve years of age, three hours a da: nd for twelve and over, four hours a day, is sufficiently long confine- ment; that study out of school should not usually be permitted: and that all incen- tives to emulation should be used cautiously. especiaily with girls. ———_-«ee- The centennial mania will doubtless ex tend to the next Presidential election. Al ready the Pottsville Miners’ Journc! names Hon. William D. Kelley as the “republican centennial candidate” for the Presidency. In doing so the Journal takes the feartui re- sponsibility withont consulting Mr. Kelley's Wishes on the subject. —__<e--__ Tne Indianapolis News says without much exaggeration: “Advertising has created many a new business, enlarged many an old business, revived many a dull business, rescued many a falling business, and pre- served many a large business, and it insures Success in any business.” i ©.
