Canal Prospects. The last usual weekly coal report from Cumberland, which appears in the Baltimore Sm of this morning, states that the coal shipment from Cumberland to Saturday iast ‘Was 6,618 tons less than to the same period of last year. The Baltimore road has carried less this year than last by 45,500 tons, and the canal by 15,155 tons, whilst the Peonsyl- Vania road from Cumberiand has carried 1,905 tons more. This furnishes some inkling of what the results may be of the policy so wilfully inaugurated with reference to the canal. But another fact is noted yet more signi cant and alarming, that a coal company (the Blaen-Avon) which has never before used any railroad for shipment has commenced shipping by rail to Baltimore, and at the rate of 350 tons a day. Opinions are various as to the underlying motive of the suicidal policy adopted. Whilst some may suppose that sentence of death has been prononneed against the canal,others have an idea that such is, by no means, the case; but that the design is to render wharf Property at Cumberiand and Georgetown so apparently valueless that the parties in am- bush may. by and by, be enabled to step in and buy and monopolize at their owa Price.
