He was arrested a few days there- after, and has since remained in jail. Payne, who has the appearance of an honest, hardworking man. was brought into court yesterday morning and sat immediate- jy in front of the judve’s bench, facing the bar and counsel. He appeared very much depressed, and during the pendency of the trial was frequently moved to tears. The theory of the defence is that Mrs. Payne being under the influence of liquor died from the effects of intemperince and exposure and in support of this theory strong evidence was adduced. The defendant was represented by Messrs Bouic and Andersen. a prominent jaw firm of this place, and Majos John G. The delegation of clergymen consisted of Revs. 8.8. Wailes, James Thomas, Samued Seott, Jacob Mitchell, Arthur T. Browy, ‘Wm. Warring, Robert Johnson, R.A. Balt! Henry Bailey, and Alexander Crum.mell, representing various nat Prof. Lan ton the ball by statin; that since the last meeting hé noticed th: this subject was attracting a great deal of tn- terest. He had received a letter from a gen- > | tifle culture, expressing his. ication that the members of the of Heaith had taken up the matter, and it would re- sult in some pi good. This gentleman ractica! expresses his belief that ONE PROMINENT CAUSE OF DEATH Was op account of both men and women who labor all day, ont at service, in hot and bad- ly ventilated basement and other rooms. ex- posing themselves toa too sudden check of as iration in going to thelr homes and jodging places at night. Many persons who employ servants take no care or heed of their health. AN they want is the most labor they can get for the smallest amount of money; the result is that no trouble is taken as to what they shall eat, drink, or where or how they shall sleep. This inditference on the part of the employer and laxity on the partof the employe as to practicing regular and per habits in the families results in much harm to the servants. BADLY LODGED SERVANTS. Rev. Mr. Scott stated that among his con- gregation there were probably nearly four hundred men and women out at work in the capacity of servants. Many of them lolged at their own homes at night. They ari erally confined at work in close rooms, damp basements, and other badly ventilaied places, and frequently have to go long dis- tances to their homes at night, or 1 e are shoved up to some cockloft to sleep in cold rooms with seant cover. The results are that they catch cold, which often results fa- tally. Among the older members of bis eburch it had been quite healthy the past i but many deaths have oveurred the children. On being questioned if the practice of holding LATE NIGHT MEETINGS Were not productive of much sickness, he said he made it a rule to close at 10 o'clock, for the reason that he thought it resulted in much harm. He thought many made them- selves sick by getting warmed up with shout- ing and excitement, remaining for a long time in a bad atmosphere, with Little ventt- lation, and then going out into a cold atmos- here. He always lowers the windows, and sts on having fresh air admitied, al- though it is sometimes unpleasant to some The disease most prevalent among the young appears to be consumption and bad ‘colds The class of physicians generally employed are not the best. During the ten years of his experience as a clergyman he ever known but one of these physicians. Mr. Langston explained that there are such cers who are bound to wait on all the poor rged whenever called upon. He dd where they are to be found. ‘ott said he Knew nothing of ithefore, » could be furnished with # List he Would read it before nis congregation. In reply to @ question, he said he often came across CONTURE DOCTORS, and when he did he always denounced them and warned the people against them. Many of the hovels where can be found groups hud- dled together, would not be used by most le for horse stables. In his church there is a charitable organization among the wo- men, “The Daughters of Enon.” In case of a death when the triends are not able to pay, the funeral expenses collections are taken up to pay for a plain coffin. On being informed that the Board of Health would furnish fins in such eases, all seemed to be mach Pleased. Dr. Bliss boot gee in detail to the delega- tion the male of proceeding when either medical attendanee, medicine or coffins are required. Mr. Scott went on to say that there was among many a total DISREGARD OF HABITS OF PERSONAL CLEANLINESS, but he thought in this particular they were making rapid improvement oi late. As to habits of industry, he thought it was greater Smang the women than men, but this may be from the fact there is very little work to be had at present; he had ad- vocate! going into the country for employ- | ment, but those who tried i generally re- turned disappoini ‘The subject of laboring at one place and lodging at another was | again diseussed, and a variety of opinions expressed—the majority taking the view that it would be better for all concerned if ser- vants and laborers were lodged on the prem- a of ises where employed.
