EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY.... March 27, 1875. CROSBY 8S. NOYES.. Editor. Largest Circulation in the District | Daily Ctreutation of the Evening Star | prosperity of = Elsewbere will be found a largely and in- fluentially signed call for a meeting of citi- zens at Lincoln Hall on Monday night for the purpose of taking suitable action in relation to the tax law recently passed by Congress. From the character of the signers to this call it is certain that their action will be thoaght- Tal and judicious, and such as wili be for the best interests of the community. This tax Jaw, rushed through hurriedly in the last hours of Congress, is not only generally op- pressive, but is so vague and defective, and So capable of being construed in a way dis- advantagcous to the business interests of the District, that it is especially desirable that our business men sho uld meet in council to consider the best means of remedy and relief. It is to be hoped that all who are interested Will be present to give the weight of their support to the action of the meeting Eprron. Star: Will you Findly through the columns of THE STAR. lowing, relat answer, he fol? ive to the personal tax bill as re- cently presented in your columns Ifamerchant has astock on hand of twenty thousand dollars, and his indebtetness is ten thousand dollars what amount is taxabie? MERCHANTS. The ninth section of the act answers the question. It reads: “That from the cssesse? value of ihe crediis only of any person there shall be deducted the amount of any valid bona fide debt or debts which such person shall individu: ally and absolutely owe, upoa the same being established by the affidavit of sueh persons claiming deduction as pro- vided.” Under this section credits are prob- ably held to be promissory notes, accounts, money secured by deed of trast, money se- cured by mortzage, bonds, money on deposit With any person or bank.any other legal claim ordemand for money or other valuable thing, or for labor or service due or to become due. Valid bona fide debts are held to be: notes, accounts, rents, amount payable in labor or Service, proportion certainly to be paid as s2- curity for others, amount of all other valid and bona fide indebtedness due individually and absolutely. All other personal property enumerated on the schedule is to be returned as taxable, independent of adeduction on ac- cunt of debt as expressed in the law. ——<e2- —____ The influence of New York city has gener- ally been potential in Connecticut polities, but for the men and money supplied in flush limes has been substituted this hard times campaign, the thin party pap of “doca- ments.” demonstrating the truth of the popu jar slangy phrase: “talk is cheap.” The New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Lager says : “The leaders of both political parties here are doing all they can to make un impression on the Connecticut election. Speakers and the usual ‘campaign documents’ are going freely, but it cannot be ascertained that much money accompanies them. The city politicians, as well as other people, are peor—they have not cot over the panic yet— and hence they have little or nothing to spare for brethren in the country. This ought not to be accounted a misfortime. The less cash, the less corruption, perhaps.” a TIDINGS, and EASTER WORK— emes To-morrow at E street church, near wer.
