REDUCTION OF COAL FREIGHT RATES GN THE CHESAPEAKE AND O10 CANAL.— Wa- ter will be turned into the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on the 20th instant, and naviga- tion opened on the 25th. Ata meeting of the directors at Annapolis on Tuesday it was re- solved to reduce the toll on coal from Cam- berland, owing to the competition from that point between the railroad lines. The caral company having recently obtained contol of one of the wharves at Cumberland. have it now in their power to control the wharf charges, and it is understood that they, at their meeting, resolved to reduce the toll and wharfage from fifty-nine to fifty-one cents, This is subject to the approval of the board of publie works. It is said there will be a re- duetion of ten cents per ton on transporta- tion. If these reductions be made it will make a total difference in favor of the canal of forty-two cents. But the falls in tran: portation on the part of railroad and can: must make a considerable decrease in the receipts of both companies for the present year, unless there should be a large increase of tonnage. Lookine AFTER District Properry.— It is rumored in mercantile circles that re- cent visits of Mr. Plowman, inspector of buildings, in the neighborhood of Water street, will result in the renting out to the bighest bidder of certain District wharf pro- perty which for years past has been occupied for private purposes by persons without-pay- ment of rent. A GREAT FARMER IN GEORGIA.—Col. Lee Jordan owns and cultivates 20,000 acres, the original cost of which was $450,000. He has #00 laborers, but is gradually adopting the as he needs. Six overseers superintend the plantations, and raise from 1,400 to 2,000 bales Of cotton. No fertilizers are used, as Col. Jordan believes them to be productive of caterpillars. Formerly he spent $12,000 per annum in guanos and phosphates, but now makes hisown manure. Dr. H. H. Coleman does the practice of the plantations on the following plan:—He assesses each head of a mily $3 year, whether he is sick or not; and thus, by taxing each man lightly, it is made burdensome on none. He Is a good physician, and says that itis the healthiest country he ever saw. Only two adults died last year ont of over a thousand souls: The Sipps is done on the same plan.
