If recetved after this hour there is great danger that, with the exception of imperative cases,—such as Deaths, Lost, &e,—they cannot appear until the following dey. ———————<02-___ The only point of resemblance between the Charley Ross abduction and the Georgetown Kidnapping affair, reported in our local columns, is that both were cases of chiid- Stealing. In the Philadelphia case there is no longer any doubt that the child was stolen in order to extort a heavy ransom from the parents, and that the notoriety given to the matter balked the kidnappers, and forced them to conceal their victim to ensure their personal safety. In this Georgetown case the probability is that the child was taken to be used to enlist the sympathies of the benevolent for the pretended mother. It is curious to note the difference of opin- ton developed in the Senate in the discussion of Mr. Clayton’s resolution to send a com- mittee of seven to the Indian territory to in- vestigate the condition of affairs and report next session. Among those who believe that the resolution was out of order, and that the Senate in special session cannot transact business of a legislative character, we fing Messrs. Hamlin and Thurman, and among those who believe the reverse Messrs. Sher- man, Morton, Bogy, Sargent, Conkling and Edmunds, the latter stating that while he should vote against receiving the resolution, he would not wish to be placed in the posi- tion of ruling that the Senate could never in executive session consider matters of this character. Although the resolution was tabled by a vote of 39 to 22, it is nevertheless very doubtful whether, in adopting a resolu- tion of this character, the Senate would really be exercising a legislative function. Se The New Yorkers are a good deal exer- tised about the telegraph pole nuisance, and the common council of the city has been called upon to take steps compelling the companies to lay their wires underground. Some time ago when opposition was made tothe pole nuisance, the telegraph people managed to capture Corporation Attorney Smith, who deciued that subterranean com- munication was impracticable, as the wires could rot be so laid in the earth as not to be daily interfered with by excavations re- quired in the erection and alterations of buildings. To this it is answered that in London and Paris the wires are extended in @ network tnroughout the entire district without the aid of poles; that wires can be laid underground without an extravagant outlay and with perfect security; and that wires so laid will cause -less annoyance to thoge who wish to make excavations, whether permanent or temporary, than the heavy poles which now extend from six to ten feet below the street surface. ——-see- The reductions in the rates of freight on the Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio railroads are already beginning to tell on the shipments of Cumberland coal, which, though showing @ decrease as compared with last year, are rapidly picking up. The shipments from Cumberland for the week which ended on the 6th instant amounted to 21,601 tons 13 cwt., a decrease compared with the corre- sponding week last year of 5,635 tons 17 ewt. For the year to that date, 163,714 tons 18 ewt. were shipped, showing a decrease compared with the like period in 1874 of 36, tons 16 ewt. Baltimore and Ohio railroad, decrease, 49,845 tons; Pennsylvania railroad, decrease, 6,962 tons 16 ewt. —__—_~~ee--_____ Another instance of the successful transfu- ‘sion of blood is recorded. The patient was an inmate of the Western Pennsylvania hos- pital, and was in the last stage of consump- tion. His pulse, just previous to the opera- tion, stood 108, and he was much emaciated and exhausted. The blood transfused was taken from the carotid artery of a sheep. The fresh blood seemed to infuse new life in the patient, bis color hightened, and his pulse went down to 6. On the following day he appeared greatly improved in health, and al- though he will probably ultimately sink un- der the organic disease from which he suffers, the new blood he has received will undoubt- edly make his tenure of lite longer. The alvocates of the that in all diseases resu!tir where no organ of the body is mat volved, the effects of transfusion arc markabie, the body beex such an extent as to enab! weakness, faily in- ery re- oming vitalized to it to throw off the malady. It is also claimed that in many cases where certain organs of the body are involved and decay has already commenced, that this infusion of new blood frequently checks ‘the destruction and restores the In- jured part to a healthy conditio: Lager beer, which has become a favorite American tipple of late years, and whieh has, to a considerable extent, taken the place of drinks of a more potent quality, is thus extolled by Mr. J. Thomas Scharf ina lecture on the Germans delivered in Balti- more last night: “Lager is as much an institution with the Teuton as music. The German is bora with @ taste for and he never abandons it until he js laid on his bed. (Laughter) Itis Dot the use, bet the abuse of any beverage that makes anevil. The lecturer also stated that the Ameri- cans, who at first displayed the utmost version to lager beer, now consume more of the beverage than tt the Ge Germazs. It is hardly tobe wondered at thatone of Tilton’s lawyers should yesterday have sar- castically asked the other side when they Proposed to enter upon the defence. Thus far the testimony putin by the defence has been—not to prove Beecher’s innocence—but to prove the moral and theological unsound- nessof Tilton. This, if proved, might be urged in extenuation of Mrs. Tilton fault in seeking in Beecher’s arms the love and sym- it will help Beecher. « J.
