Have wea or the material y department has spontaneous combs elosely inquired into. from the repeated fires d building that an incendiary Is at work. A gang of incendiaries, operating in the north- Western portion of the city, were apprehended a few months since, and the sentence they received In our courts would, it was thought, put a stop to the incendiary business. Crim- inals of this kind seldom eseape ultimate unishment. The case of the “ fire-bug” of Newburyport, Maas., whose operations sev- eral years ago created a sensation thoughout the entire country, is an illustration. At frequent intervals for several years fires Would be discovered in difierent parts of the city, all bearing evidence that they were the work of an incendiary. An indirect clue was obtained in the shape of @ small box packed with shavings and other combustibles, which was found where an incendiary attempt had been made. Similar boxes, all the same in point of construction, were subsequently found. The incendiary prosecuted his work on the slow-match principle. by placing a lighted candle in the box, and putting the lat- ter at some point in the doomed building where it would be fired on the ignition of the shavings. Aftersetting his infernal machine the incendiary mis if he chose, tay the | foundation of an alibi by leaving the city on @ railroad train, and by the time the candle we have. N stored away in the ngerous tendency which should be is quite evident red in the I had burned down to the shavings and the fire had been discovered, might be fifty miles away trem the scene | of bis crime. After repe: cover the offender suspicion rested upon a certain carpenter, but the fence was in- Sufficient to warrant arrest, and he was not molested. Subsequently he moved to the west. He was “shadowed” still, and one the detectives obtained access to his shop during his absence and found one or more of the incendiary boxes, together with a chisel with a peculiar in it, Which was used in their construction. His arrest on this strong cireumstantial evi followed, and, if we remember aright, he made a con- fession. At any rate, he was convicted and Was sentenced toa long term of years in the penitentiary In passing from the Cap to the junction of the Metropolitan line of ears, corner of 9th and F streets, one may count thirteen lamps upon which the little signs bearing the names of the streets are either upside down or “hind Side afore.” The same erratic arrangement may be noticed in other parts of the city, and the observer is left in perplexing ignorance Whether the contractor who furnished the signs, or the individual who devotes his ser- viees to cleaning the lamps is to blame. At any rate, as these signs are intended to guide Strangers, comparatively few of whom are cock-eyed, it would be well to have the names of the streets (bad enough at best) given correctly, and “upside up.” Imagine the feelings of a granger, in a hurr: “Mass. Ave. N. W.” or “Penna. Ave. upside down! ee: It costs something to bury a mayor in New York. The funeral of the late Mayor Have- meyer cost the city 33. Among the items of expense are engrossing resolutions, $850; five bands of music, #2 flowers and decorations, $425, music at the church, $75. The New York Evening Post very sensi! ly thinks thatas one reads the bill the sponta- neous character of the funeral services disap- pears, and a conviction takes its place that the spectacle was not the voluntary expres- sion of popular regret, but a purchased show. —-.ee-—__ fet efforts to dis- The Baltimore Sw referring to the pro- jected new railroad between New York and Phitadeiphia, thinks there is great need of a second line of railroad between Baltimore and Philadelphia. This need has long been felt. The Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore road like all close monopolies has fallen into selfish, hunkerish habits; has little regard for the public convenience, and would be the better every way fora little whole- some competition. +20e- The session ts rapidly dwindling away, and nothing is being done to settle the financial relations of the government to the District. It ts about time our prominent citizens Were making some united representation to” Congress of their views in the premises. A memorial generally signed by them might do good service. It is @ good sign to notice that there is a re- action against the crowding in of special studies in the New York schools; and the new board of education favors a retarn to the simple rudimentary branches of English ed- neation. a ‘There was a decline in the prices of coal at the Seranton sale in New York this week of | iy to @ cents per ton since the sale of last | month.
