GENERAL BUTLER [refused to let Beecher have copies of the tersand documents in my bands: General Butler was my friend and adviser, but he never was paid a fee by me or any firm: he never was counsel for us against the custom- house; I have paid fees to counsel, who were enguged by Tilton, but I never contributed to the extént of publications made from time to Ume; [never paid anything or promised anything. Counsel was going on to show that witness had been indicted and was pursued under civil suits for statements made by bim, but these the court ruled could not be brousil inas ey- idence.
