EVENING STAR, we ASHINGTON : pESDAY _ January 19, 1875. « ROSEY s. NOYES. ‘The Coming Senators. Next to the rnal Louisiana troub pending election of United States Se ina number of th ‘ interest. The democrats of New York have already fixed upon F\ Kernan as the successor of Sena and report speaks well of his integrity and ability. It is said that Mr. Kernan’s success over the Murphy combination means the supremacy of Tammany hall in state polities. The com- pliment of a nomination has been tendered by the republicans to ex-Senator E. D. Mor- gan. . Massachusetts will elect a republican Sen- ator in place of Mr. Washburn, but the ques- tion is who will be the fortunate man. The indications are that the contest will be a long one, as the friends of Hoar and Dawes are pretty equally divided. It is regarded as ven possible that Mr. Washburn may be lected. Balloting in caucus will probably vegin to-day To-morrow is the day agreed upon by the lemocrats of the New Jersey legislature to select a candidate to be elected to the Untted States Senate. The contest between the democratic aspirants for the honor is a sharp one. with no decided supremacy to indicate ihe Incky man with any precision. The prominent candidates are Stockton (the pre- sent able Senator), Randolph, Gilchrist, Browning, and Vanatta. The Rhode Island G to-day, when balloting in joint convention for Senator will be resumed. At the last ses- sion twenty-one ballots were had, the last ballot resulting: Burnside, 42; Dixon, 26; Barstow. 19: kes, 4; Howard, 5, Lawrence, ard, and Binny, 1 each. To all outward appearances the vexed question has not materially changed, and the prospect is that many more ballots will have to be taken before a choice will be Assembly meets made. In Indiana Mr. MacDonald. democrat, will be elected. In this connection it is reported that Mr. Voorhees was not in- duced to withdraw from the contest so much on account of “party integrity” as by the promise of the democ nomination for Governor. A week ago Senator Ramsey's chances of re-election were thought to be remarkably geod. but a recent dispateh from St. Paul Says the combination agxinst him is gather- ing force. We suspect t Senator Ram_ sey will win, however, as he has great strength and Is a good tactician. The demo- crats have nominated Ignatius Donnelly. In Tennessee and Nebraska, balloting for Senator begins today. Nebraska will prob- ably elect Mr. Thayer, a republican, and an ex-United States Senator, and in Tennessee the resnit is doubtful. A dispatch from Nashville says the sporting fraternity are betting three to one on Andy Johnson. Senator Chandler, of Michigan, will doubt- less be his own successor; as Senator Hamlin, of Maine. is to be. The following United States tors have been chosen for the term beginning March 4th next :—California, Newton Booth, re- publican; Connecticut, William W. Eaton, democrat; Maryland, William P. Whyte. democrat; Ohio. A. G. Thurman, democrat; Virginia has elected her lieutenant governor, Gen. Withers, a democrat. The others will be chosen before the date above nrentioned. seen The course of the New York Trifnme in the coming fight between the telegraph compa- nies will be worth watebing. Jay Gould, the reputed owner of the paper, is at the head of the present movement to break down West- ern Union stock, as he is of the present fight on Pacific Mall, while Mr. Orton, one of the trustees of the concern, is the president of the telegraph company thus put in new peril. Under these ctreumstances it 1s going to re- quire pretty careful steering to k: craft off the rocks on one side whirlpool on the other. ——_-+ee- The Baltimore Sun notes that « John G. Whittier, the distinguished Massachu Setts poet, has written a letter on the Loutsi- ana question, in which he says: ‘I regard Government interference with the legislature of @ State as ill-advised and dangerous,” but the Sun fails to continue the quotation. The Quaker poet goes on to say: “But, while rezretting the action of foree under his command, I am not at all «lisposed to join in denunciations of General Sheridan, who is above the suspicion of other than hoa. est motives, however mistaken he may have been in his mode of procedure under the Geult circumstances of his position. For Some inscrutable reason, whether from a sense of its own incompetencey, or of the su- wisdom and state-manship of the Ex ecutive braneh of the Government, the ent Congress has seen fit to leave the Presi- dent todeal with the delicate and dificult question alone, in despite of his earnestly- expressed desire for its action. In the mean- time, the colored citizens of the State of Louisiana have had every ason lo crave tection. not alone from avowed enemies, professed friends. Left as they are, be- ween the upper millstone of ex-slav eholding arrogance and hatred. and the nether one of corrupt and mercenary officials; for whose conduct they are held ‘responsible, they cer- tainly need what constitutional protec- r tion it is in the ney ee Congress to afford. boxty ‘and the sooner tha tion on the subjeet th the whole country and in particular.” We learn by dispatehes fr Penpsylvania, that the heid this morning nom son. of Mercer county, Pennsylvania, as their candidate for United States Senator. Mr. son is the present Register of the Treasu- and at one time represented ong of the Western districts of Pennsylvania in Con- gress. He has ever since the organization of the republican party been recognized as one of its most influential and able leaders, and isdeserving of the compliment bestowed upon him. ————<ee-—__ The New York Post prides itself om its dig- nified, fastidious English; and has a list of words that are tabooed in the paper, posted up conspicuously in the office for the use of editors and reporters. The Post seeks to give dignity to its pages by the use of rotund and stately words as well as by proper words ‘Thus the fippant, unimpressive word “news” is discarded in that paper to give place to the more sonorous designation “ intelligence.” The various departments of the Pust are accordingly headed - * Political Intellig “City Intelligence,” “ Religious Intelli~ gence,” “ Financial Intelligence,” ete., ete. ‘The Post's stand in behalf of English unde- filed will, we fear, prove as ineffectual as Richard Grant White's zealous labors in the same direction. This is an age of short-cuts and labor-saving inventions, and the man who can shorten an old word, or coin a new Word that expresses an idea directly and happily is welcomed as a benefactor.
