Another Babe iu the Woods. A very remarkable ‘lost child” incident is related as having occurred at Crothorsville, near Jeffersonvilie, Indiana. Mr. Wim. Prigtoy bas afarm on both sides of a stream called Muscattatack river. He alo bas a Mrs. Prig- ley aud a three year old-littie Eddie. One morning Mra. Prigley had an errand to their corn neld some distance from the house, and lett Eddie piaying in the yard, She twoid him to stay there until she returned, promising not to be gone long. The appearance of a coming storm drove ber home eooner than she ex- pected, and Eddie was gone and nowhere to be found about the house. As the child did not answer to her call, she slarmed the neighbors, and a vigorous search for the boy commenced. The hunt continued all that day and night, and the nextday and night, and was fruitless. Noone had seen the boy. He was given ap for lost. The distracted mother attempted to drown herselt in the Mus- cattetack, but wasrescued. The whole country for miles around was scoured, snd as many as 200 people were actively engaged in the search Ail the search was ditected > the Prigley res- idence side of the Muscattatack. The stream had swollen four feet from rains, and over- flowed the bottom lands, and no one thought of looking on the other side of the river. The child disappeared on s Satarday. The next Tuesday @ boy who was in the woods haul- idg staves, about four miles orer the river, uearly Opposite the Prigley residence, heard = grvan among the bushes, and found a ‘ahild iy- ing on the ground with upturned ty for the winds birds to bury him when the leaves fell. But the child bad still some life in it. ‘The boy picked it up and carried it home. Food and medical attendance were provided immediately, and the little starveling re- vived. It proved to be Eddie Prigiey. The mother is now glad she waa rascaed from the muddy waters of the Muscat- tatack. There was a very puzzling ques- tien how the ebild got over the river, and & theory has been advanced for ite soliition. Mr. Brigley bas some fields over the stream, and had constructed a sort of pontoon bridge for bis convenience in passing to and fro. Bat the flood that came soon after the child was lost carried away the bridge. The little fellow had doubtiess crossed over it. The rains came, and he could not get back; so he wandered on throngh the bottum lands to keep out of the way of the rising water. He had been seventy-six hours without food, and his preservation is looked upon by the Crothersviliaus as miracu- lous.—St, Lowis Repullican. Freak or 4 Discaapep Loyaa —The little village of Climax, Michigan, has had a sensa- tion. A charming littie druggist became enam.- ored of arich widow's daughter, and pressed his attentions ardently and persistently cpon her, which she as earnestly repelled, and finally bewas drivenfrom the house. But he even then was not willing to give her up. He made nightly visits to the yard and peered through the windows where his fair dulcines was eup- posed to be innocently reposing in the arms of morpheus or some other fellow. This trick was soon found out, and he was expelled from the yard ip a manner that made him revolve like # tly whecl. But not willing to give up without at least a relic of remembrance of the fair one, he visited the clothes line the night after wash day avd purloined @ chemise and a pair of drawers belonging to her, which he stuffed and hung up in his bedroom, making a full effigial representation of his adored by adding a staffed head and feet. It was found by officers who ‘re searching for the lost wearing apparel, who, after showing the imitation mummy to a few friends near by, heartiessly disemboweied it and carried bome the stolen garments. Though ridiculously strange, the above de- scribed occurrence is substantially trae.—Chi- cogo Times.
