SSS Ge LADIES’ GooDs. EVENING STAR. CROSBY &. NOYES. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: I THURESDAY........October 5, 1874, } Where to Advertise, { Tes STaz has now s circulation very mach «arger than that of al) the other city combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outside. The result is that Tas Stam affords unsurpassed advan- tages ae s medium of communication between | all classes of the community, in the way of the | adjustment of demand and supply. | a Reference was made in this column yesterday to the unreliability of many dispatches sent | from the south, so far as difficulties between the | whites and the biacks #ve concerned, and | especially to a dispatch ecnt trom Alsbames | charging the deputy marshals, who recent- dy arrested four men sccased of the marder of Billings, with brutality in the treatment of their prisoners. Special Agent Clarke, of the Post Office department, who errived here from Montgomery yesterday morning, saw the pris- oners when brought into Montgomery on Sat- urday last, and pronounces the press dispatch a falsebood from beginning toend. The arrested parties were icoking well, and made no com- plant of il! treatment. A statement was made nh & Montgomery paper that they had been brutally treated, but the friends of the prison- ers promptly and publicly contradicted the story. As to the assertion that ‘along the entire routs to Montgomery they were the sub- Jects of cures and abuses trom negroes and scallnwage, who were freely almitted to the cars wh-n remaining over at any station,” Mr. Clarke states that only in one instance Were they insulted, and then by a drunken ve- gro who was fired at by one cf the marshals, the | latter esying that the men were in his charge, and until proved guilty most be treated as gen- tlemen. The marshals who made the arrests | natives, one of Alabama and the other of | Kentucky, and are generally esteemed as hon- | erable gentlemen who could not be guilty of | mailtreating helpless prisoners. The statement that marshals are entering private houses at | night and committing all kinds of improprie- | ties, is also reported on good aathority withoat foundation, except that it is sometumee neces- | sary to make arrests at night, for tho reason | that the parties wanted remain secreted during the day. If the outspoken denunciation of out- rages turtle South by such conservatives as Jof- ferson Davis and Gen. N. B. Pillow means any- thing, it means that the respectable portion of | the democratic element of the South desire the | speedy arrest and punishment of the perpetra- | tors of deeds of violence. If they are sincere im deprecating these outrages they have an oppor- tunity of proving their sincerity by aiding the United States officers in arresting guilty par- ties, instead of shielding the crimivais and | throwing every obstacle in the way of their | apprehension. —+s0-- President Gorman, it will be seen, makes a decidedly roce-colorcd exbibit of the operations of the Chesapeake and Uhio canal in his report for September. We nope his figures and expec. tations are reliable. It is satisfactory, anyway, tonote that the conviction has reached him that the time has arrived for furnishing in- creased facilities for the shipment of coal at Georgetow2.
