At the same time the sum paid sor pensions will be largely increased, owing to the advance of nearly all rates by the last Uon- gress. The decrease im the number of pen- sioners is owing chiefly to minor children reach- ing the age of sixteen. Marriages among widows are growing rapidiy less each year. The addi- jon to the various rates made at the last session have increased the disbursements to a greater extent than was expected. The addition to the pension appropriation for next year, in spite of the Jarge reduction in numbere, will be over £1,000,000. This year no defatcations have taken place among pension agents. ‘Taz STaurey Exvgtors OontRact.—This morning the Plimpton Envelope Company sab- mitted to the Postmaster General epecimens of three of the dies Lon mage for use upon the stamped envelopes, which were to Mi Geo. The expediency of recognizing his withdrawal and erasing his name was considered in the PTOper committee at least two years prior Snail action tn the case,” i.¢,, at least as ear as October, 1 Why was not his withdra recognized and the final action taken at that time? “The rumors with which the air of Brooklyn was heavy, aud which, it Mr. Tilton was Lot the auth silenced by a word says Mr. Shearman, ‘were the caus* of delaying that action.” How painful have the resiiis been of that ill-judged “expedi- eney!”? My Inst word, then, in relation tothe Pls- mouth church method of dealing with this sc dal is, that the authorities of that church, by refusing to take notice of Mr. Tilton’s apostacy rom the church or of his defamation of the stor (tor we must assume that it wae defama- tion), are responsible for the growth of it to its pertentous magnitude. The task of vindicating Beecher would have been far easior had there been a plain, straightforward cour of discipline as svon as the secret which he pre- tended to be guarding bad begun to be divulged. ¢ Inley t Weppep axp Winowen Wrrarn ax Hore, A Detroit paper tells a sad story of a young and beautiful indy, Miss Emme Halsizer, daughter of an influential resident of Gakiand county Mich.
