EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. CROSHY S. NOYES... Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY October 2, 1574. Por the Eye of Advertisers. ‘The preesure of advertising aud news matter upon our columns requires us to issue a double abeet to-day; aud as we shall probably print an eight paged paper for some days, at least, with a largely increased edition, advertisers will do well to improve the opportunity to reach an imme use pumber of readers. -se-- —= Views of Commissioner Blow apea District Affairs. Commissioner Blow, who has recently re- turned from a visit to Missouri, in conversation yesterdsy with a representative of Taw Star, stated im substance that there Is no city in the | country in better circumstances, or with better FTospect, all things considered, than Wash- ington. Other cities are heavily burdened with taxes to pay for their public improvements, and they have no rich partner, as this city has, to help them out. The rate of taxation here ia really not +o excessive when compared with the rates in many of the large cities. If the people bere think the general government has not Cone ite share in the furnishing of means to improve the streets and avenues, they should not forget that vast sums bave been expended inestablishing the seat of government hera. The most practical thing now is for the people to come up promptly with their taxes, thereby reducing the deb public + Commis- stoners to show to Congress as clean a sheet as possible. If this tedone there need be no fears as to the part the general goverument will here- | after take. ‘The citirens of this District have already done nobly in the way of public improvements, by which they have set at rest for all time the ques- tion of the removal of the seat of government. There is really no argument left for the advo- cates of the scheme: the mud holes and dust heaps have disappeared ; the old canal naisanca obliterated; and, in place of them, we hava clean streets and gutters, pieasant drives and walks, and attractive lawns and parks, Public spirit anc thrift seems to pervade generaliy, Potwith«tanding there is a general depression in business thronghout the country. But these periodical depressions are always remedied by & cessation of the canse, which is extravagance, and @ return to habits of economy. In these matters, corporations and municipalities are governed by the same jaws as individuals To repair a broken fortune, an individual has only to practice habits of economy and frugati- ty, and, with the proper energy, he is sure to put himself on his legs again. ‘The citizens of this District ha¥e now a bean- fel city spread out magic-like before them, and to the wonder and admiration of visitors from the states and from abroad. They should now maintain this pnblic spirit by the prompt payment of taxes, and their rich partner wil! not let them suffer. There appears, ssys Commissioner Blow, to be & growing sentiment of pride in our national capital. The people of the states look upon the city of Washington as a common homestead or heritage, and they feel s willingness and de- sire that the general covernment shall do ite share toward making this city a metropolis wor- | thy of th A pres: is great nation. ng want now is good hotel accommo- dations. This isa matter of very great impor- | tance to the prosperity of this city, which should by all means be foremost in this branch Of enterprise, as it ia co year by year to be the great social as well as political center. A better class of private residences is also wanted, bet, m this particular, a very fair start bas alreaty been made whieh should not be abated, as there can be ro doubt that the de- mard for them will hereatter be a out simit, The Cowmissioners are anxious to encourage | the prosperity of the national capital to the utmort extent of their power, which at present, is Limited to the m payers themselves. Every doilur of their money Will be placed where it willdo tbe most good im redeeming the public credit. Mr. Blow stated that hereafter he will beat bis post darly anc be ba to meet the citizens of the I jet. os Sup ed by the tax- The large extra ed: Yue Star donblce sheet yesterday were completely exhausted at anearly hour, and copies were almost anob- tainable in the evening.
