Un cross-examination witness said that Mrs. | R. gave him the bond and asked him to do the bet he could with it; witness paid #750 for it with the understanding that she could redeem it in four months; witness saw her in July ani she said that she had drawn the interest and paid him the intereat due, $30; witness sold the b after keeping it four months to Mr. Koones; (a notary public) witness did not know who put in the name of Middieton & Co. J. W. Frazer &etified to the transfer; saw Bosd then; don’t know that he did any more than to sign his name as a witness. The bell wrs 897 st £3,000 each. ———_.-—___ ANOTHER ALLEGED ATTEMPT AT CHILD Stzarixo.—Last night as a colored woman employed in the family of Mr. George Follans- bee was walking with a child on 2d street, near the corner of D northwest, a white man (said to have resembled the individual who about four weeks ago'‘grabbed” the child of Mr. O’Brien) came, and seizing the little one put it under his arm and made off. The woman screamed, and in a short time @ crowd of children and young men were in = of the would-be eee. and pressing bim closely be laid the child down pear the intersection of 24 street and Indiana avenue, and ran into the lumber yard near that point. Meredith, charged with cruelly mu- tilating an avimsl ot the fox kind, by entting ott his tail. John Ward, a colored man, testi- fied that he brought a fox from the country to sell, and went into a restaurant on Pennsyiva- nia avenue, between (th and ith atreets, to of- fer it for sale. Two gentlemen, named’ Mere- dith and William Hopkins, were there, and remarked “that iza nice fox, he’s got a bushy tail.” Complainant had the fox in his arms, and Meredith caught hold of the chai bim up, when Hopkivs tock hi of his tail and heid it out, remarking, “This is a Bice fox, I’m go.ng to take that brash,” at the same time he asked what he’d take for that, and complainant said tive dollars, Defendant said “I'm going to have that brash,” and drew out his pocket-knife and cut the fox tail off, leaving only astump. He remarked to , **now bring suother fox and I'll do the same thing.” Meredith was present i court, but Hopkins was reported by Lieut. Kelly to be t00 drunk to bring into court. During the testimony of the countryman Mere- dith kept interrupting him, denying the charge and protesting that the cutting wes done by a third party who had not been arrested; but the colored man stack to bis first statement, and offered to produce the ox in court to prove his statement ebout there being nothing bat a stump left. The sale of the fox had been pre- vented on account of it; fined $5 and costs. Meredith protested against the judgment, say- and held ing that he only beld the fox up to look at it, when @ stranger came up and whipped ont his knife avd gave a clip, (motioning with iis hand,) and the fox ard his tail were two instead ot one. The judge stated that Mr. Meredith would be commiticd for contempt of co when Meredith raid he ws sat'stied with b judgment, but it wasd—d hard. E.church, of which Key. L. H. York is pastor, are nightly increasing in interest, and forty-five conversions are already reported, and still the good work goes on. Coat TRapx.—The coal trace for the week et has been quite up to the average, though Suit with some of the companies. Tae receipts of Cumberland coal for the week were 16,417 tons, and 1 tons of Youghigheny gas coal and the shipmente 15,190 tons of Camberland, and 1,621 tons of the gas coal; making the total receipt for the week 18,005 tons, and the total sbipments 16,811 tons.
