The result | is that Taz STAR sffords unsurpassed advan- tages as a medium of communication between all classes of the community, in the way of the adjustment of demand and sapyly. German in the Schools. As the fact of the failure of the experiment fn | teaching the German ianguage in our public schools bas given rise to constderabie discussion, it may be worth while to note the results of similar experiments elsewhere. In Baltimore the otber evening, tbe committees of the school board having charge of a proposition for tntro- | ducing the stady of German into the grammar | and high schools of that city, held a meeting to bear tbe views of Superintendent Creery. He stated that by order of the School Board he last year visited a number of the larger western Cities for the purpose of makicg personal obser- vations in reference to the oxpediency of hay- ing the German language taught in the public schools, a subject which was considerably , agitated in Baltimore last year. He examined the olie-school system of Cincinnati, St. Louis, avd other cities in that section of eoun- try, and found that their manner of taaching German was not managed on the eystem con- templated to be introduced here. Instead of having the language taught in all the schools, it was the custom in those cities to establish | im each section of the town as many Ger- man- English schools as are thought necessary. Parents desirous of giving to their children | jerman tongue can in that | case send them to the schools where that lan- | guage is taught, and where the English is not | instruction in the neglected. After speaking of the disadvantages of the introduction of this new department into all the schools, which would necessitate a com- plete recoustraction of the curriculam, Mr. Creery closed by expressing himself in favor of | biishing in Baltimore one German-English | school in each section of the city, and if it | 4 should be shown that they were well patronized, more can be established at a fature time. | After considerable discussion the board ad- | journed without coming to avy conclusion. As regards the experiment in the Washington echools, the following, from the Trefusia, (Ger- man,) of the 19th instant, is of interest as showing the views of mtelligent German-Amer- icans upon the matter For tome time past the Germans and the | German press have discussed with mach par- tiality for their subject, the German school question, and the far more important question sto the admission of German instruction in the plan of stay in the public schools; and they especially considered the adoption of ‘the latter 8a & great step in favor of “the foreigner, even if only a few hours & week were devoted to the language and the instructions confined to the elementary principles. The writer of these lines Fegards tiils latter proposition as exceadingly | pernicious, and will brieity give his reasons therefor. Since the children of German parents acquire the language as their mother tongue, it is for them & great loss of time to compel them to re. cite in the same Classes with those not of (er. BD dezcent; because th the latter the Ger- man £0) new and strange, and it will require years of study for them to ac- Quire that facility of speeca which the German child possesses when he first enters the school. It foliows that the German child is throwing | away his time learning the elements, or rather Feceiving lessons ements of a language with whi familiar, and sil for «i accommodation of his Anglo American comrade. It will not be disputed i the German prese: e pupil of German de ecent, but forms one of t! ities for the American pupil, to whom the sounds, &e., Of our language are entirely stranza Again, the echo man desceut, must receive his in his own vernacu! and there i: he same cessity th taught the language in Air my therefore, German instruction 10 lic seboois is to be considered a api the German-American. thea instructed in separate classes a teachers. [f the rectors should strike oat German tins: from the conree of stuty in the public let not the Germans oppose it; the An jean pup! ar by The crrors above pointed out wo 1 be perceived if the Germaus would only insist that their children shou'd not b* compellad to learn German asa foreign language, bat as a language a3 much the eernacular asthe English. If the Germans will take the trouble to dis. cover what is the real need for the proper edu- cation of their children, they will come to the conclurion that tha: need i+200d private schools. It would scon be seen that these schools would be atteaded far more numerous!y by the chile Oren of sensible Anglo-American parents than would the English schools by children of sensi- ble German-American parents. | if any cone thinks that advertisements are not read, we invite hisor her attention tothe fact that im response to a single advertisement in last evening's Stag fifty-three answers were received before lock to-day Mies Catherine Beecher 1s rather a smart old | lady, like all of the Rey. Thus in her detence | of “brother Hen @ says, first, that the | troubie ai! originated in his (brother H.'s) anx- iety to aid Tilton, who was “reduced to poverty aud dirgrace, lewling to excess in drinking;”” but in concluding she gives a: a reason why tue | ease shoud not be dragged before the New York courts that “abundant money could be employed to corrupt judges aud jury, and to | hire perjered witnesses.” Bat it would seem that the money is sil on Beecher's side, with | millionaires like the C sand the other dry goods men of Plymouth church, backing him UP; While, according to Miw Beec showing, Tilton is a poor, impeennious devil, Without friends orresources. But it is quite evi. dent that Brother Henry, a+ wel! as Sister Cath erine, bas little stomach for running the gaunt- let of a legal tribunal. ldren be »y Germain | een 6: The revelstions in regar: to the secret sarvica division of the Treasury (+partment are any- thing but gratifying to those who look for econ- omy and honesty in the administration of gor- ernment affairs. Beecher most needs and doubtless | ‘Would most enjoy at this time is seclusion aad quiet. Bat this is just what the good-natared fools who call themselves his friends will not allow bim to Wave,as is shown by the absant Gisplay made over his retarn from bis summer vacation, in the telegraphic reports in the morning papers. Had the cencral figure of this elaborate account been a conquering hero, with ‘BOspot upon his shield, tustead of a teacher of religion and morals who is, to say the very least, under a cloud, it could hardly have been mor, fulsome in tone or more particalar in details. In addition to the ordinary tax upon fame, it is Mr. Beecher’s mistortane to have to pay the penalty of having the most fvolish and indis- ereet friends a public man was ever cursed with.
