EVENING STAR. ~~ CROSBY S. NOYES.......Rditor, Largest Cirealation in the Distrie! Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON OITY: MONDAY August 10, 1874. The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer. or portion of it, may have Tas Staa sent to rep for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, ac- companied by the money, shouid be sent to the Dusiness office of the paper. Where to Advertise, ‘Tee Stan bas now a circulation very much larger than that of all the other city papers combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outsides. The result is that Taz Stak affords unsurpassed advan- tages as a mediam of communication between all classes of the community, in the way of the adjustment of of —_— a? supply. As to Renaissance. The papers published in those cities where government buildings are being or are to be erected come to us with periodical accounts of the pregress or prospects of these structures, each generally accompanied by a glowing de- scription of its particular pet. The details of these descriptions vary somewhat at times; bat we observe that it generally crops oat somewhere the style of the building is to be renais- —either renaissance straight, or with tome slight modification or improvement, which will greatly add to ite besuty. Exactly what this sounding term may mean in all cases, it is | pretty bard to define; but there are grounds for | &® suspicion that whenever an architect con- ceives a fenciful jumble for which he knows no be gives it the convenient name Now renaissance is a taking word | nd from the lips of a fellow who coupie ef weeks in Paria there is something very impressive about it; but we beg to ask if there isn’t danger that we are going to have just @ trifle too much renaissance > A Swiss cot- tage is a lovely thing in its proper location and Gevoted to appropriate uses; but a Swiss cottage ‘Won't answer for all places and for every pur- pose. It 1s just 0,@ great mapy people thiak, with renaissance. One of the pleasant features of the grangers’ organization is the “harvest home,” or picn! in celebration of the gathering of the harvests. | In the west these picnics, judging from the pub- lished reports, are very enjoyable affairs, call- ing out as they do hundreds of friends and neighbors fur the interchange of social courte- sies. Being conducted under the auspices of the grangers, both male and female, disorders om such occasions are very rarely heard of. ‘These reunions, besides beiug pleasant affairs, are of practical benefit to the grangers, who bave an opportunity of exchanging views relative to agricultural matters. Speaking of the grangers, it is rumored that they are taking preliminary steps to con- struct another railroad across the continent. The Chicago Inter-Ocean of Friday contains a meagre report of a secret meeting held in that city recently, composnd of eastern, western and fouthern capitalists, and characterized by great Unanimity im the project, but it is not definite- ly known whether it was composed entirely of grangers or not. According to that paper it is propesed to make a through double-track line from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It is not pro- posed, however, to construct it all the way, but by connections that the projectors know they fan get, to sccomplish their purpose. It is likely that the grangers frequently get credit | Or blame for things they had no connection with as grangers. Since the organization grew into formidable proportions it has been credit- ed with having ‘‘a finger in every ple,” and with taking a prominent part in various polit- | ical movements. Local organizations may have Participated in purely local projects, but as yet I grange has kept aloof, it is ase ical schemes, leaving the sul- Ordinate granges to do pretty much as they Please in their own localities. —— se Co-EpUCATION OF THE the disca vention at Detroit recently on the education of the sexes, the weight of argument seemed to be against the con- mingling of malee and females. Se iS Acatx.—iIn Prof. Urten, of Vasear college, one of the most | euccesstul temale colleges im the world, gave it &s bis cpiuion that young menand young women could not study side by side without detriment to the wemen. Outside sports they should not compete in the echeolroom. Prof. Hoemer, of the Wisconsin University, read a paper on “ The Co-education of the Sexes in Universities.” He had been eight years connected with mixed institations, Spd bad extensive acquaintance with profes- fers in similar institution, and the effect, both Of observation and experience, was decidedly averse to the commingling of the sexes in the Bniversitts. He said that their education might be ruccessful if their association was lim- ited to the clsss-room, but when it extended to the table and led to familiar intercourse, it would be a disastrous failure. Gen. Custer is making it lively for hostile re- skins in the country through which he is moving | his expedition. He has the usual army officer and frontier opinion, tanght by oxperience, of the treachery of Indians, and pate no faith in their peace professions. He does not believe in parleying, but in fighting with the savages and reducing them to submission at the point of the sword. It has been intimated that he was not exactly the kind of an officer to send on an expedition through a section inhabited mainly by friendly Indians, since the exercise of the test caution is required to avold giving giving offence to friendly tribes. Thus far, however, his expedition bas apparently pro- | Voked but little opposition from the Indians, and this he has swept away in his usual dashing manner. One ef the beauties of lynch law is shown by | an incident which recently happened in Kan- fas. A mob went to the house of a man who | they supposed had stolen a horse, aad, dragging him from his bed, hung him to a tree, and then | shot twen' wo bullets into him. The next morning they found they had got the wrong | man, (this oue being a hard-working labore! with three children,) lived just next door. «The law's delay’? may Sometimes be very vexationa, and its judgments Bot slways in accordance with justice. It | that ten | would be far preferable, however, guilty persons should escape its punishment than ene innocent person should su: crime of another. -20-- Something should be dons to break up the revolting crime of wife beating and k Which has become s9 common tn ail large A drunken brate, bearing the undeserved title of busband, enters his home tn .the small hours of the morning. seizes his wife by the hatr of the head, beats her into « jelly, or sometimes he varies the performance by jobbing a knife into her repeatedly, splits her skull with an axe, or cuts ber throat from ear to ear. He is tried by the court and recetves as an adequate panish- ment for the crime of murder a few years im- prisopment in the penitentiary. It is rarely, indeed, that one of these fiends meets bis just Geserts on the gallows. A little more rope for the wife kille wee It doesn’t seem to be a very good place fer political candidates in Tennessee this year. A nominee for the legislature was shot and mor- tally wounded in that state on Saturday night by unknown parties. There will probably be no Giffculty im finding another candidate to take bis piace. ———— 8 Mr. Bonper will have to quit using the trotting horse Dexter as an advertising card. His time bas been beaten so badly by Goldsmit) Maid as to make him slow by comparison. 2:15 ts the figure to beat now. A fall report of sil the points covered will be prepared by Oen. Birney, and revised by the Commissioners, for publication this | week. The document is an fmportant one to the people of the District, and will be looked for with interest. The debts of the Prince of Wales amount to £640,000, or nearly 5,500,000 of our money. The ministry will make an effort at the next jeeting of Parliament to get the English trea- sury to assume this burden, partly on the ground that a portion of the debt was incurred in public entertainments, etc., and partly be- | eaure if this t# not done the future king will be forced into bankruptcy, which would be re- | garded as a national disgrace. eae The project of a great national university, which would naturally be located in Washing- ter as warmly and unanimously indorsed by the National Education Association at their last annual session.
