EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5S. NOYES. ......Edaitor. Largest Cireulation in the Distriet Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY: EDNFASDAY... July 22, 1874. The Star by Mati. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it, may have Tam STAR sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rato of Sfty cents per month. Orders, ac- companied by the money, should be sent to the business office of the paper. to Advertise. ‘Tae Star bas now a circulation very mach larger than that of all the other city papers combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outside. The result is that Tae Stak affords unsurpasmed advan- tages ae a medium of commanication between all classes of the community, in the way of the Mr. Tilton’s presentment against the famous Drescher of Plymouth Church will be found in full elsewhere in to-day’s paper. It is, to say the least of it, a startling document, and one that, until it is fully explained away in all its parts, must be regarded as very damaging to Mr. Beecher. It is, however, only just to add that Mr. Beecher’s friends annoance that he and Mrs. Tilton “are preparing a statement, Which will be submitted to the committee on Thursday, and which wiil satisfactorily explain all correspondence bet ween them, and all ot matters contained in Mr. Tilton’s statement Until this explanation appears it i# due not lees to the high character Mr. Beecher has al- Ways maintaiged than to the abstract principles of fair play and justice that a judgm:at in the mind of the public should be suspended. Mean- time the every-day world’s peopie, who hold plain common sense vie m such subjects, must be excused for entertaining the opinion that it will be found very hard to reconcile | Mr. Beecher's actions in the premises—and par- | ticularly some portions of his letters—as con. sistent with the counsels and practices of a teacher of morals and religion. Nothing less than positively proving his alleged letters to be forgeries and all Mr. Tilton’s statements to be falsehoods would seem to meet the case as it stands at present. -s0-- The Philadelphia Press notes the fact that | tue Clyde ship building trade is failing off, and says the trade im this country seems te be look- ing up. Asan evidence of this, it states that Meesrs. Crump, of Philadelphia, who built the vessels of the American steamship line, the Wilmington builders, and the smaller yards located along the Delaware, all have their stocks full or have orders on band, while the Pacific mail steamship company, two of whose splendid vessels were recently launched from the great works of Mr. Roach at Chester, have Ordered a fleet of five trom the same gentleman. ‘The great success of the American steamship company this summer, tos, gives good reason for believing {Lat it must soon order several new steamships. The Keading railroad com- pany is pow building on the banks of the Deis- ware, by American workmen, with American materials, and upon American models, a tteet of forty steam iron colliers, with an average tonnage of about fifteen hundred each. see. Should Indian Agent John D. Miles, of the Cheyenne and Arrapaboe agency, resign in compliance with the request of the execative committee of the iate yearly meeting of Friends, the Indian service will lose a faithfal and efficient officer. The body of Friends re- ferred to could not have been in full possession Of the facts, or they would not have taken euch summary action. Agent Miles, in calling for troops to drive off the white thieves on the res ervation and to bring back hostile Indians, seems to have been influenced solely by ad to prevent future disturbances and consequent His prompt action met with the hearty approval of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, and yet he is asked to resign becanse be is “too warlike.” The Friends will do well to withdraw their request an i ing Agent Males in a position in which he bas exhibited good judgment and efii- ciency. A new theory for the bloody propensities of Pomeroy, the Boston boy butcher, is advanced. Three prominent physicians recently calied on the mother of the li tle monster, and were in- formed by her that her husband was a butcher, and that tustbefore the birth of Jesse she fre- quently went to the slaughter hoase to witness the killing of the animals, and that somehow she tock a particular delight in eeeing her has- band butcher the sheep, the calves, and the cattle, and not unfrequent!y she assisted him in this bleedy work. She alto said that after Jesse was bern and became old enough to have @ knife in his hands he wasatl the time jabbing knife into pieces of meat, and when still older and about bis father’s market he didthe same thing. With some people these facts will ac- count for the boy’s singular propensity fur shed- ding boman blood. | s2ee- | The fall text of Gen. Butler's letter in refu- | tation of certain statements against him, al- | leged to have been made by Gen. Hooker—a | telegraphic abstract of which was published in yesterday's Star—shows it to be a pretty | rasping epistle. But, severe as it ia, it 1s not too much fo in view of the base charges made, and provided they were made by Gen. Hooker, | as Gen. Batler rather takes for granted We do not believe, however, that Gen. Hooker used the language attributed to him in the newspa. per paragraph upon which Gen. Batler bases his letter A good advertisement insures a tusiness con- nection of the most permanent and indepsnd- ent basis, and isin a certain sense a guarantee tothe customer of tsir and moderate prices.
