The result is that Tus Star affords unsurpassed advan- tages ae a medium of communication between | all classes of the community, in the way of the Sdjestment of demand and supply. | | ‘The religious press have come to the pretty | unanimous conclusion that it .is injudicious on the part of the friends of Mr. Beecher to en- deavor to “‘compromise” the Tilton scandal, or to make a whitewashing investigation. The Christicn Advocate, which last week was anxious for nvestigation and clearing up of the mys- tery, rejoices this week that the investigation bas begup, and that it promises to be earnest and thorough. It regrets, however, that Mr. Beecher and his friends did not see their way clear to have constituted the committee alittle differentiy, both ag to its personnel and the of selection. The Advocate reminds Mr. Beecher and his friends that this is not simply a personal and family affair between Mr. Beecher and his church, but stretches out far beyond | that and even beyend the bounds of the Con- gregational denomination. It suggests, there- fore, that six other gentlemen, the peers in Christian character and reputation of those now epgsged in the inquiry, be chosen from ober denominations and be added to the committee. It adds that an examination and report by such @ committee could not afterward be called in question. The Boptist Union boids that if Mr. Beecher has committed offences which would depose an ordi- bary man from the ministry he should be deposed Tegardiese of bis brilliant talents and his great | genivs. We cannot have one rule for small men and another for great men. “It is better,” it | Saye, “to lose every great manin the world from | the ministry than to wink at lewdness in their ranks.” Tho Liberal Christian thinks the great | preacher of Plymouth church has kept silence | too long and compr mised too much already, | and that vothing bat a clear and free vindica- tion of his character will now avail. “Nothing,” at think: can be worse fur the public morals than the unhealthy excitement which secrecy, innuendoes and apparent fear of investigation | have produced.
