CROSBY s. ‘ES. ...... Baitor, Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer. or | any portion of it, may have Taz STaR sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, ac- companied by the money, should be sent to the business office of the paper. ‘Tae STR haz now a circulation very much | larger than that of all the other city papers | combined, reaching every household in the District and a wide range outside. The result is that Tus Star affords unsurpassed advan- tages ae a medium of communication between | all classes of the community, in the way of the Sdjestment of demand and supply. | | ‘The religious press have come to the pretty | unanimous conclusion that it .is injudicious on the part of the friends of Mr. Beecher to en- deavor to “‘compromise” the Tilton scandal, or to make a whitewashing investigation. The Christicn Advocate, which last week was anxious for nvestigation and clearing up of the mys- tery, rejoices this week that the investigation bas begup, and that it promises to be earnest and thorough. It regrets, however, that Mr. Beecher and his friends did not see their way clear to have constituted the committee alittle differentiy, both ag to its personnel and the of selection. The Advocate reminds Mr. Beecher and his friends that this is not simply a personal and family affair between Mr. Beecher and his church, but stretches out far beyond | that and even beyend the bounds of the Con- gregational denomination. It suggests, there- fore, that six other gentlemen, the peers in Christian character and reputation of those now epgsged in the inquiry, be chosen from ober denominations and be added to the committee. It adds that an examination and report by such @ committee could not afterward be called in question. The Boptist Union boids that if Mr. Beecher has committed offences which would depose an ordi- bary man from the ministry he should be deposed Tegardiese of bis brilliant talents and his great | genivs. We cannot have one rule for small men and another for great men. “It is better,” it | Saye, “to lose every great manin the world from | the ministry than to wink at lewdness in their ranks.” Tho Liberal Christian thinks the great | preacher of Plymouth church has kept silence | too long and compr mised too much already, | and that vothing bat a clear and free vindica- tion of his character will now avail. “Nothing,” at think: can be worse fur the public morals than the unhealthy excitement which secrecy, innuendoes and apparent fear of investigation | have produced. The Freeman's Journal says that Beecker's sermons ‘are occupied with | Diasphemous descriptions of our Lord and | Saviour, and on other points make the Gospel | the exponent of licentiousnees”—as in the in- stance which it refers to Mr. Beecher’s pub- lished discourse to prove, in which he represents “the Prodigal Sou as the best fellow of the two, | and the only reason the other didn’t waste his living among barlots was that he wasn’t man | enough tu have bis fling!” | The teeunes companies are becoming alarmed at the frequency of terrible fires in | Chicago, and are about to take means to pro- tect themselves. At arecent meeting of under- writers in Chicago, representing £100,000,000 of | capital, resolutions prepared for presentation to | the city council were adopted demanding a complete reorganization of the fire department, the extension of the fire limits, the organization | of a corps of eappers and miners as auxiliary to | the fire department, the immediate increase of the capacity of water pipes and number of fire- plugs, the purchase of additional steam engines of extra power, the gradual removal of lumber yards from the thickly settled portions of the city, and the immediate protection of the im- Portant business center of the city from the grest mace of frame buildings in the southern, ¥esiern aud northern sections, either by demol thing such buildiugs entirely to the width of fay cne-baif of a mile from the nearest point of | their exposure, or by the erection of numerous heavy and bigh fire walls, intersecting those | New Pablications. They seem to vary considerably | according to locality, and the task of welding them into a national platform is one which is likely to give “the opposition” some trouble. | “Zhe New York correrpondent of the Philadel- phia Ledger says that the democratic leaders, such of them as are in that city, are not a little “put out” by the plank in the Indiana demo- eratic platform which proposes to pay off the pational debt in greenbacks, and after a brief | consultation at the Manhattan Ciub they have come to the conciusion that something must be done to counteract the bad effect it must have on the fall elections. Among the dissentients from the platform may be included Congress- | men Cox and Fernando Wood. The former is credited with saying that the resolution in — will compel the democracy to do their tk over again to convince the people that repudiation is not in any sense a part of their doctrine, present or future. -s0-- As Leonard Myers has shown some dispost- tion to shirk the action of the Republican con- vention im the Fifth Pennsylvania Congres- sional district, the Republican Central Com- | mittee of Philadelphia nas reiterated its de- | cision ‘(that there was but one candidate before | the Kepublican Congressioncl Convention for | the Fifth district, and that the Hon A. Farnsworth will be dead, physically, one Of these days, but he won’t know it, and will probably keep on wagging his head and shaking hus beard until he is chucked far under ground,— Just as, now being dead, politically, he proposes to run for Congress this summer in the ith Itinois district. He may possibly try; but considering that Gen. Muribut had over 10,000 majority in that district at the last election, it | ien’t Likely that ‘Honest John” will make much of a run of it. ‘The howi of the self-styled “ independent press’ over what they conceive to be Mr. Dana's danger of imprisonment gives a rew ihustration of the truth of Butler's couplet— see. i “No rogue e’er felt the haiter draw With good opinion of the law.” The decent newspapers of the country don’t seem to be weeping and wailing over the mat- ter very much. According to Gesiean, out of the twenty- seven districts of the counties of Maryland, which voted on the license question last week, only seven have gone for the license, while a large majerity of the popular vote, it is said, bas been cast against the sale of Nquor. It is reported that some of the liquor dealers wii currency note and the late twenty-five cent issue.
