A case of considerable interost to local politi- clans was recently tried In Bal'imore, involving | the validity of a contract to infiuence voters by means of such little seductive creature com- | forts as lager beer, pretzels, cigars, &c. In | the son of a gentleman who desired to © nomination for the city council en- | tered into an arrangement with the keeper of a lager-beer ssioon by which the latter was to furnish voters with beer and cigars, the party Of the first part agreeing to pay the bill. When the latter was presented payment was refused for some reason, and the saloon-keeper brought sult and recovered a Judgment for the fall amount of the bill. The case was appealed to | the city court, and a decision was rendered yee- terday reversing the former verdict on the ground that such contracts are contrary to pud- | lic policy. The judge quoted law making it a penal offence for a person to give victuals and intox.cating iquors to voters at a regular elec- | tion for the purpose of influencing their vo and held that the same principles of public | Policy which apply to elections ordained by law should be applicable to primary elections, and | that it is equally corruption to the voters whether they sre treated to beer and cigars to influence their yotes at @ primary election or at a leg ’ wann was well | The same gross management which so dis- gueted those in attendance at the Springtield meeting last season seems to mark the pro- ceedings incident to the College Regatta at Saratoga this year.
