The call for this meeting was signed by eighteen of the twenty- two members of the District House of De! — and by many prominent citizens. The ‘all was not crowded, but a fair representation of our citizens of Irish vity were present. ‘The meeting was called to order by Mr. John L. Dease, who nominated Speaker Shepherd, of the House of Delegates, as chairman, and he was elected unanimously. Mr. Shepherd om taking the chair expressed his warmest sympa- thy for the objects of the meeting. Mr. D. A. Brosnan was chosen as secretary. Rev. C. W. Dennison made a long speech, and was followed by Mr. Jobn L. Dease in a very eloquent ad- Gress —— delivery of which he was fre- [— y applauded. The next speaker was Mr. obn A. Perkins, of the House of Delegates, and at the close of bis remarks Mr. Dease pre- sented a book called “The National Roll of Honor,” which was opened for signatares and Fubscriptions. Tur Tarateas—The first formance at the National Theater last night, of the new local play. written by Mr. Francis C. Small, of the Dis- trict, for improvement in debate. A medal was also presented to Miss Jeannie O'Conner, a member of the Young Ladies’ Literary society of the college, for excellence in elocution. Mary Patterson, an? which led to her illegal and brutal arrest, the facts connected there- with, are simply these: During the evening al- luded to, two gentlemen called into Mrs, Pat- terson’s ice-cream parlors, and partook of some ice-cream, and shortly afterwards lett the prem- ises. After a short time one of the same gentle- men returned to Mrs. P.'s house, and alleged that he had lost his money in Mrs. P.’s house, and this man became exceedingly bvisterous and very threatening in his manner.
