A CALL for a meeting in this city at an early day of the National Republican Committee is contemplated. The object is to consult in re- gard to the political situation, and to confer with members of Congress, before adjourn- ment, concerning the fall campaign. TAB DEFICIENCY APPROPRIATION BILL, which was returned to the House with Senate amendments increasing the appropriation: paseed by the House very materially, was con- sidered this morning by the House Approp tion Committee. Nearly all the Senate am. ments were stricken out, and those retainst largely reduced. A committee of couference on the bill will be asked for. A TELEGRAM to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue from Sapervisor Cobb, at Nashville, received here yesterday, says that night before last, at midnight, Mr. J. 0. Lotz, of the internal Tevenue office, and Revenue Agent Napin were driven out of’ Murfreesboro, Tenn., by a mob, and compelled to leave the town on foot. Mr. Lotz, was unable, in consequence, to compl: with instructions as to work in that place, which, bad been assigned to him from the revenue ba- reau. Tam New Secaetary Sworn Ix,—General Bristow was sworn into office as Secretary of the Treasury to-day, the oath being adminis tered to him in the President’s room at the Ex ecutive Mansion by Chief Justice Carttar, of the Supreme Court of this District. Soon ‘af- terwards Secretary Bristow went to the Trea- sury and entered upon his official duties. This atternoon the chiefs of the various bureau= called upon him to pay their respect. They were cordially received by the new Secretary, and took great pleasure in their visit. A Cross Contzst.— The Committee on Elec- tions yesterday submitted a report in the con- tested election case of Thomas M. Gunter v3. Ww. W. Wilshire, from the 34 district of Ar- kansas, and report unanimously in favor of unseating Judge Wilshire, and declaring Mr. Gunter legally elected. The question tarned pon the point whether certain votes cast for “Thomes M. Guntee,” “8. M. Gunter,” “1. M. Gunter,’ should be counted for Thos. n- ter. The committee had proof that G: rand ‘Wilshire were the only two candidates for Con- gress in that district, and that the votes above given should not be counted as scattering. By counting them for Gunter he had a majority. Tue Bank Note PaintixG Inquiry.—The Committee on Banking and Currency this morning resumed the consideration of the hank note printing question. In reply to an inter- rogatory, Mr. McCartee stated that since the burean of engraving and printing had been es- tablished oply $430 had been lost, which, in de- tall was oop av of fifty cent notes to the value of $: eight ten dollar notes. The loss, however, was made good to the govern- ment by an assessment upen the employes of the room from which it was missed, he (McUar- tee) paying bimself a portion of the assessment. There was a great variety of different wines, however, although the quantity in each case was smail. The attendance to-day was comparatively small, not over fifty persons, all males, being present. Only in exceptional cases did the wines bring fancy prices; the most being sold at moderate rates. Mr. Cleary, of the firm of Latimer & Cleary, officiated’ as auctioneer, and began the sale at noon. In disposing of this par- ticular bottle, Mr. Cleary said he had learned frem a creditable source that it was Mr. Sumner’s especial admiration, and that wh3n- ever he went into his wine cellar, which was perhaps but once a year, he had this identical bottle hunted up in order that he might be sure that it was still in bis possession, and always remarked that he intended to have it opened on some occasion when he bad particular friends to dine with him. ‘The house to-day presented a desolate appear- ance. as most of the furnitare sold yesterday had been removed by the purchasers.
