EVENING STAR. ~~ CROSBY 5. NOYES.......R4itor. Largest Circulation in the Beading Matter on Every Page zr. WASHIN: @TON ort: WED* ESDAY.... ‘The independe:t Ananisses who have been | ecored by the Washington papers for their falsehoods and malice, have been laboring for some time to zet up some sensation yarn against | the bewspaper men here that would afford | them revenge. Last night they sent off, by | Preconcert,® telegram that there was great excitement and sensation in Washington over the discovery of a Credit Mobilier ring in the | Metropolitan Paving Company, involving the prose yeaa bere, and that (of coarse) the “‘testimony to-day was very damaging against the corrupt Board of Public Works.” Now we need hardly say that nobody but the correspond- ents bas heard of this excitement and sensation. ‘The evidence yesterday in regard to the Metro- politan Paving Company developed nething not generally known in regard to its history, and the attempt to give the idea that it was organ- ized since the present District government went | into operation is asunfair and malicious as most Of the statements of these ‘‘special” slanderers of the District. The fact w, as known generally in the community, the company was organized as long ago as 1870; long before the District government was organized. Despite the affected surprise of thebe “specials” that there was «uch a company, and that it had been doing work in this city; there has been no fectet as to its operations or its membership. The pecials”’ would have us believe that they were totally ignorant that the Metropolitan company paved M strest, and a portion of Pennsylvania avenue, and in fact did most of | their work under contracts received long before the new District Government went into opera- tion. And they carefully conceal the farther | fact, testified to, that a year or two ago it wound vp its operations, because it got the cold shoulder trom Gov. Shepherd, who did not | choose to be charged with favoritism in giving contracts to & company that had intimate per- | _ Sonal friends among its stockholders. So far as | we can judge, the Metropolitan company had rothing to conceal or be ashamed of. It was a local company, made up of well-known, reliable Citizens, and its work will challenge comparison With the best done in the city. Indeed, we have heard the opinion frequently expressed that our wn citizens could have done all the work here quite as well and as cheaply as any ontside | companies. A vote was taken yesterday in Baltimore county to decide upon the question of annexing it, or a portion of it, to the city, and the propo- sition was rejected. The Sun says, however, that the measure is only temporarily defeated, and was rejected yesterday largely through the intiuence of the county officials, and the office- hokding and office-seeking interests. That pa- per advocates legislative action on the question, and says “it could never have been in contem- Piation by the framers of the constitution that the inhabitants of an outiying district or su- burb, if so minded, should forever be able to re sist the extension of the city’s limits, and main- tain a state of semi-lawiess independence, out- | side of al! municipal control, and equally detri- mental to the interests of the adjacent city and the state.’ | ‘The ‘mcrican also attributes the defeat of the measure to the same ir fluence, and says: expansion of the city cannot be stopped by thi. one set-back, ard it is only # question of time &s to its embracing territory in Baltimore coun- ty. A few more years of paying two-thirds of the county taxes, receiving nothing in retarn for their money, and being governed after the Towsontown fashion, will be very likely to | cbange the minds of these same voters by the time they are called on to cast their ballots on the annexation question.”” = -2ee- Our special correspondent at Washington tells a very painful story about the discovery of | a sort of local Credit Mobilier,” in the course of the District investi; involves a number of prominent geutlemen gepnected with the Washington newspapers. We hope that each of them will be able to show tbat be got the profitabie stock held by him by | lawful purchase, and that there was nothing in | its ownership inconsistent either with private integrity or the conscientious discharge of pub- | lic duties. — Baltimore American. We suppose it is nataral that the Washingtos correspondent of the American should seek to “«geteven” with the Washington newspapers, but the proprietors and editers of the American krow from their own experience how easy it is for malicious or vindictive persons to invent or inflate “painful stories” of this kind. The American has had oceasion frequently to suc- cessfully repel malicious allegations by ita co- temporaries, that its editors and proprietors were venal jobbers, influenced altogether in their journalistic course by their success or failure in getting government pap or patron. age. We have no doubt that the Washington hewspaper men indicated will be able to repel any charges of the kind with the same readiness and success vtec The Chicago Tridune reluctantly yields the palm in bebalf of Chicago’s Chittenden as a mode} witness, and declares that “‘ he dwindles to = pigmy by the side of Kirtland.” « Chit- | tenden,” says the Tribune, “is simply a barrel | that don’t leak, but whether there is anything in the barrel remains to be seen. Kirtland is | ® barrel full of concentrated lye that don’t Jeak.’ - <a Monday was the day fixed by the master car- penters of New York for a grand ‘lock out” of ‘workmen who should refase to work ten hours aday. The day came, but not the action.
