Dix for Governor, with the idea of putting him into the U.S. Senate in place of Mr. Fenton. The personal friends of Gen. Dix, it is said, have @ further purpose to put him on the track for the Presidency by these preliminary steps. The present Senate of the New York legislature holds over for an- other session, and so wil! tuke part with the Assembly to be returned this fall, in theelection of U.S. Senator. The New York Journal of Commer: says com. plete returns for the month of March show that the total value of foreign goods landed in New York for that time was forty-two and a half millions, or less than one million below the figures tor the same month last year, and, with | that exception, the largest March return in the | history of the trade, and oniy three months of any former year coming upto this total. This book is a more continuons effort tu the line of hamorous burlesque, and gives promise that the author may not unlikely mount tothe lead of current American humorists. For one thing the humor dves not consist of magn #pelled words, but is conveyed in good English, and with occasional couches of patbos, imagination, and sentiment such as characterize the works of all the great humorista of the world. The story tells how Max Adeler, tired of the bustle of the ¢ ty, mo with bis family to a quaint old town on the shores of the Delaware. In their search for quietness they meet a series ef very droll adventures, and extraordinary accidents, and form some acquaintances, whose woadertal anecdotes are the most grotesque of American Munchansenisms. There ie also a capital love story woven into the thread of the hurly- burly escapade; and altogether it is alively, readable book.
