Mr. Harrington paid no attention to the letter, but Shongnt Dest to watch his office, which was done ou that night. Yesterday, atter consul with ig og Richards and Chief iTvoe in relation to the letter, it was decided to keep watch of the premises last night, which was done by the officers. About 11:30 o'clock, while the officers were ing on tae opposite side of the street, they ob. served two men come around the cor- ner of 4% street and walk up the steps leading to the door, which they opened | and entered, closing it behind them. In afew moments one of them threw up the win- dow in the front office, and after looking aroand | closed the window and fastene: the inside shnt- t-rs. On approaching, the officers could hear them at work insid after consaltation it | was deemed best not to arrest them while in the act, but to “pipe them off” to acertain who It appears | an hour a heavy explosion was heard, whiol proved to be the blowing upof the abse- joently, after all had become quiet, the two reappeared at the door, one with a large valise, walking off a few ars together separated, one going in an east- erly direction and the larger one of the two, who carried the valise, starting in the directioa of Sth street. This one was pursued by the major and chief, who soon had him cornered, and while Mr. ‘Clarvoe caught him by the throat Maj. Richards relieved him of the valise. He at first assumed a style of injured dignity, but finding who had him he made no resistance, and was ted back to police h-adquarters, the chief first relieving him of a large sized revol- The valise recov- ered contains all oe panes, as far as ascer- tained, with the exception of a $1,000 bond, which is missing. The officers and Mr. rrington are a’ loss to understand why this attempt was m: as there was usually no money kept there, nothing which could be turned to any use. It is thought likely the job was pat up to procure some important papers likely to come before the grand jury at the next seasion. Most of the tools used by the burgiars were been taken away by Chief Clarvoe. They are a very fine kit. aor them are seven or eight fine steal) jimmeys, with a large number of steel wedges of various sizes for safe work, three cans of Dupont’s best rifle powder, and a cotlof fuse with percussion ends, a ball of putty, pap2r of tacks, heavy sledge hammer, tongs, wrenches, The door of the safe was completely shat- tered by the explosion of the powder, which appears to nave been poured in throagh the hole of the knob, which had been knocked off. An inside door of iron probably prevented the papers from being burned, as they re all in perfect order. The folding doors between the tront and back offices were biown off the hinges and shivered. The glass in both front and rear windows was shivered, and the room in the greatest disorder imagtnable. One precaution taken by them to elude obser- vation, was to cut a large square out of a fine Brussels carpet, about 12 by 16 feet, and tack-it over the large double window looking into the yard; this was found hanging up as they left it nd the butiding was filled with the smoke of gunpowder. Judge Fisher is absent in Del having been called there on the occasion of the death of his father-in-law. Some of the tools used in this job have beon recognized by the stonemasons in the emplo;- ment of Mr. M. G. Emery, whose stable and tool-: ouse were broken into and robbed. Dr. Henry Slicer, for more than half a century past a minister of the Methodist E pt: copal church, died yesterday afternoon at his residence on East Baltimore street, Baltimore, ‘Md., in the 74th year of his age. He was born at Annapolis, Md., March 2th, 1801, his father | being Mr. Ancrew Slicer, one of the surviving | officers of the war of 1812, who was present at | the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, and who died a few years since at the age of 91. Henry Slicer was educated in Annapol be experienced religion, and while boy was zealous in the cause of Christ, travel ing often with the preachers of that early day to country appointments and exhorting sinners to repentance. In 1816, he removed to Baiti- more, and learned the business of farnitara painter and gilder, and during his spare hours devoted himself to theological studies under the late Bishop Emory. In the year 121, Mr. Slicer received @ license to preach, and Was arsigne@ to Baltimore circuit, Kev. S EF. Kozzell being then his tirst presiding elder. He next served one year on Harford circuit, and in 1823 he was appointed to Ked Stone circuit (west of the Alleghany mountains) and for a year traveled it, adistance of 300 miles, preaching over 25 times each month. In 1824 he was ap- pointed to Ebenezer station, in this city, and afterwards served fora = ateach of tae places: Frederic! burg: Baltimore city station, and Carlisle; and for two years Savii op Great Falls and Baltimore circuits, In 1832 be was appointed presiding elder of Poto- mac district and se as such for three years. In "ss ‘34 he was the agent for the Metro- politan church in this city, and tn 55 he was | mace presiding elder of North Baltimore dis- trict; in ’59 the elder of West Baltimore, and in 1862 was placed in charge of the Sailors’ Union Betbel, where he till 1870, when he was residing elder of Baltimore district, such until the conference last month, yn he was granted a supernumerary relation. Probably there wasno more devoted man to the work in the conference, and being of a robust constitution he often Tode circuits which would have broken down | domestic manufacturers. Hs elected chaplain of the U.S. Senate at the } extra session in 1637, and served as such in the | two following ular sessions. It was in this period the duel between Cilley and Graves, members of Congress, occurred, and Mr. Sticer made the prayer at the obsequies of Mr. Ciile: taking oceasfon to strongly denounce the bai barous custom of dueling. He afterwards de- livered a discourse against dueling, ich an | edition of 50,000 copies was circulated, and a Dill against dueling was passed by both Houses, in @ large measure owing to this discourse and the efforts of Mr. Slicer. In “41 and when stationed at Carlisle, he took an active standin favor of the temper- ance movement. In ber, 1846, he was win elected chaplain of the Senate, ha being at this time in ‘ge of Wesley Chapel. So cburch that the corner -stone was laid in 1454. I in- tended to have written to you several weeks since concerning the improvement in my heath, which is now very apparent. I have asod one bottle of Favorite Prescription with the best results, although I will admit I was somowhet discouraged atter its use (for a sbort time only) I took it under very disadvantageous circam- stances—having the «upervision of the house, and during the season of ‘house cleaning” I was obliged, through the incompatenc; of help, to do more than I ought, and, of coarse, suffered dreadfully, lifted when I ought not to have raised my hand, and did all | coaid to bring “order out of chaos,”—but upon laying aside all cares and continuing the remedy, I find after using less than one bottle to be’ so much benefited that I have discontinued the use, with no return of the symptoms of which [ wrote you. I have suffered terribly, and what added to my distress was the consciousness of not procuring rellef from ordinary sources. At times it seemed about impossible to stand so great was the distress. All of those severe neu- ralgic pains have disappeared; they were «0 bad at times I could hardly walk without some ex- ternal pressure. They seem to have left m like magic, suddenly, and have had no return: allother symptoms have been removed. The severe weakness and faintness have disappeared, and Ican go upstairs with comparative ease now. I would bave informed you ere this of my improvement, for | appreciated it, but I was tearful it was only transient bencfit I waa- receiving; but I think safficient time haselapsad to consider the beneficial results permanent. Accept of my best wishes for your future suc- cess and your kindness in advising me. Very truly, Mus. M.
