Sixty delegates from the various lodges of ‘ythias of this city lett last night Pa.,to attend their annual con- Vention to be held there this week. Company B, first regiment Washington Light Guards, Capt. Devald McCathran, have moved into their new armory, in Esputa’s Hall, navy the end of sixteen and eight months; bat the actual value sbares depended on the amount of payment which had been made. At different periods in 1869 Pabst was advanced money to the amount of £10,770, which is a larger sum than had been paid’ by him and larger than the worth of the shares. For the urpose of securing the association he executed of trust to pay thereafter $240 per month until the whole amount was paid up, and the association closed. This security was not ta compe! the payment of adebt, but to compel the member to meet his monthly payments. The money advanced was not a loan, bat @ purchase of the member's shares, leaving him without further interest in the association, ex- cept to pay to the uttermost farthing his month- ly installments. If the association ran for 16 years and § monthshe would have paid $24,000 in the treasury. The judge proceeds to explain that by the rapid compounding of interest, the tines, &c., the time of the association may be greatly bridged, and therefore the more prosperous the association the shorter its existence. If the time be short the member advanced will have the benetit by the close of the association, and although no longer a member he shares in its profits. “We discover nothing, therefore, in the nature of this association which is unlawfal or in any wise necessarily more objectionable than other associations wh ose object is to make profit for their members. On the contrary, 80 far as it hoids out encouragement to its mem- bers to save their earnings, in-tead of squandering them in idleness and vice, it deserves to be supported and encouraged. If, however, persons will join these associa- tions in the expectation of borrowing money at pleasure, with no obligation ever to repay it, or bscribe for an amount of stock on which they re unable to meet the monthly dues, and thus subject themselves to fines at the rate of 12) per cent. per annum interest on the sums in F Henry Jenifer, colored, was ac- sbot'in the thigh by Henry Gordon, at the houre of the former in an alley between 7th and 8th streets southeast. 1] leave here daily hereafter at 5.5) mon the Baltimore and“ Potomac rai!roat Philadelphia, making close connection at Baltimore for the west. Such a man, however, may win his fortune without thelr aid, and by joining them takes the risk of wasting hls time and forming a connection with those who may defraud him of his property. Judge W. then discusses this particular case, and says-the advances were not loans, and quoting from the deeds of trust says that they contain no obligation to pay a debt, but to pay $2 per month on each share. He quotes from the account: Pabst’s advances $10,170, and his The Second National Bank of this city, or- ganized in 1572, and located since then on F street, near 7th, was to-day removed to the new and elegant iron front building on 7th street, above E, epposite the Post Office department. very apparent shortly after the bank was established that more commodious quarters would be needed than the location on F street afforded, and the officers and management, Joaking out for a location, found the nt ite, and purchased it. On the op- | Fosite side is @ room of the same size, and on | ¢ upper stories and in the back building there | are conveniently arranged office rooms, each being supplied with basin. The entire bu floors being laid on arches turned from heavy iron beams. The front of the building is painted a French grey tint. This, with large windows, $522.45, and insurance $40. But he had in that time aid $10,258 on account, which should hay been applied to the payment of dues, And i such a case no fines could have been laid. The great error in the account isin the item , charged in June as a “loan on 110 .”” As this was nota loan, nor was a loan contemplated in the deeds of trust, the company | teok his stock and advanced him in considera. | tion of what had already been paid on the monthly instalments. Ali that P. had to do was to pay bis monthly dues. The loan on 40 | shares of stock in December, 1870, $4,120, is also anerror.
